Just installed the usb driver to my pc elitebook.

And in the sound options (as it defaults to 16b 44k) I noticed I could set it to 32bit 192khz !

Which is above the advertised 24bit

Thought I said before but it sounds very good.

Don't use my z7, 7520, cd900, sa5000 any more.

The good thing about the 1aDAC is that across various pc/mac platforms you could set up the usb driver an have the same amp/DAC/driver set up every time

Where as before I would use the 7520 an then would have to contend with slightly different sound/power 3.5mm headphone jacks

(Yes I know having a usb dac/amp would sold this)

It's just these usb headphones are very handy.

It's just a shame about the 7-8h battery life

If someone is going to buy just one headphone to use with compatible mobile devices and laptops, especially many older ones, and not as the end component of an ultra hi fi chain, then these headphones are an Amazing and convenient option. Deliver excellent sound in a beautiful premium and fuss-free package.

Having said that, if you can't find them for a good price (~$250) and you find yourself having to pay full original retail (~$400), then skip these and buy something like the ultrasone 880 (unless you're a true fanatic of using just mobile devices, and especially have many older ones with crappy internal componentry, as mentioned above).

As far as the battery life goes, it is short at 8 hours, but you can always drive them as standard MDR 1As using the analog cable provided.

The dac is great. Not tda1541aDC class but what is?

I don't have a ESS dac to compair it with, all my stuff is old.

Used to use airport express optical out to a Sony es MD DECK as a dac


Female vocals are fab, it has coincided with my renascence for Sade's discography (16bit FLACs then now on 24/96 vinyl FLAC's )

I do feel that the metal coating on the drivers has lead to my uptake of more music this year.

The bass holds better, compaired to the "saffire coated" 40mm drivers on the cd900, an the larger 50mm drivers on the 7520 can take a louder input but the 50mm LCP drivers sometimes sound they have "break up"

Where as the metal coated drivers on my z7 an 1aDAC don't have this perceived "break up"

For what I got them for (£150ish $220ish) they are def worth very penny.

I always liked how Sony stuff gets discounted so aggressively

Heck I got my walkman a15 for £99 ($150) day after Xmas

That Philips digital headphone only can do 44/48khz

Where as the Sony do those plus 88/96/176/192khz as well as DSD64 2.8mhz and DSD128 5.2mhz.

I'm still curious to try it tho.

Quick question, if the charge is depleted, will the unit simply operate/revert to/and sound like the MDR-1A?

At anytime you insert the analog 3.5mm jack it will turn off the electronics section.

Maybe it will sound like the 1a but I'm guessing the 1aDAC does not have the balanced/discreet input option the normal 1a has...

After some review hunting, i took the jump and i purchased the 1aDAC's.  These things are absolute genius.  The sound is amazing; neutral, clean, tight bass, voices come from places you'd never expect the soundstage is spacious and accurate.  These things made me listen to my music collection again.  I can say without fail that music mastered from the 60's to the late 80's sound so much better than the tripe from the 90s forward.

Actually, Sony have already done that with the MDR-1RBT, which has the s-master built in and they have a fairly slim profile for full-size cans.

The 1RBTMK2 version apparently takes that to the next level and is HRA capable, which (besides being marketing fluff) probably means that it can engage it's internal 24bit/192kHz DAC when used wired with a capable device over USB.  I haven't tested this yet as I got them for fluff) probably means that it can engage it's internal 24bit/192kHz DAC when used wired with a capable device over USB. 4.1 kHz FLACs.

@dcfac73, as it turns out, it is false - thanks for picking up on an old post that would have misinformed people reading through this thread.  I think I got that info from a review I read somewhere (by an obviously confused reviewer) but couldn't verify the claim as I didn't have a hi-res DAP (and still don't) so just took it as gospel.  
 
So, I'm now pretty sure MDR-1RBTMK2 would not work through a USB cable, just the analog one.  Btw, to my ears it definitely does sound better wired, especially with well-mastered Redbook FLAC compared to BT - a bit clearer, with more bass definition and extended sub-bass.  The sub-bass in particular is one of the few weaknesses of the 1RBTMK2 via BT and I understand the 1ABT to be an improvement on that from the people on here who have heard both.
