Black. Why?
Trying to find a correlation between colors and serial numbers, i have a silver unit here serial S17230194 and the volume gives an increase every 2 steps, what you are describing is exactly what i experienced with my first unit, dont recall the serial number but it was a silver model as well

What volume setting range do you commonly use? I find it odd that I would be using as high as 60 with the Ananda nano without blowing out my ears. Most reviewers mention volume settings in the 30's. But at least I did find that all settings above 56 suddenly sounded as it should so I could evaluate the performance. Everything below 56 sounded not only quieter, but broken.
Do you feel that this "two step same" unit is functioning properly? It seems still messed up to me. I am trying to decide if I really even want an exchange, or just choose something else.

Mine also at Aune Europe, black version, sound is excellent but has the strange ‘only increasing volume per 4steps’ issue.
I could live with it if It was ‘by design’ but if not I will ask Aune for confirmation and possibly replacement.
Hi All,

I have just sent the message below to both the European and Corp Aune outlets:

“Please be aware that after initial enthusiasm concerns and confusion is starting in the following major thread on your product.

Post in thread 'Aune S17 pro'
https://www.head-fi.org/threads/aune-s17-pro.970060/post-17838964

Could you please clarify and take the appropriate steps in either communication and/or service/replacement ?

Hope to hear from you soon”

I’ll keep you posted on their replies.

Aune HQ responded very promptly with the message that they already contacted the distributor about ‘the method to solve this problem’.
I am now waiting for the response (and next steps) from the European distributor.

So, the big problem for me with the Aune S17 "wonky" volume behavior is: It's not just about larger than normal jumps in volume. The sound quality is terrible at any setting below 56 out of 63. At anything less than 56, it sounds totally broken. Muffled in a thick haze. Then when going from 55 to 56, it suddenly sounds open and beautifully detailed as it should. Even though I would have thought that with this much specified power, 56 would destroy my headphones and ears. Which on some tracks such with expansive dynamic range such as the excellent Janis Ian Live Tattoo, I am as high as 60 out of 63 into Ananda Nanos which are not hard to drive.
So, there are actually at least 3 issues with my unit:
Wonky jumps in volume control.
Anything less than 56 out of 63 sounds totally broken-completely hazy and veiled.
And, it doesn't seem to ever make it to what I would have expected to be max specified power or listening level.
