I am unable to find any dedicated lengthy Audioquest cable threads, so I am starting this one. This is where we can discuss the various cables (any) and add our comparisons to other AQ models or brands.
I have a dedicated system for movie watching. The chain is: TV > Audioquest Vodka Toslink > Creative Sound BlasterX G5 (DAC) > AQ Golden Gate (now Sydney) 3.5 mm to RCA > JDS Labs Atom amp > Senn HD 800.
The Golden Gate was replaced with the Sydney (more expensive). The Sydney is thicker and better constructed. The jump in sound quality was as follows:
There's a lot more ambience audible in the mix vs the Golden Gate. For example, the Casino Royale train scene: you can hear the echo of their voices in the cabin. On Golden Gate, not so much. Everything sounds a lot more "clean" (on Golden Gate) but not as natural.
There are more micro details and background details are more audible and there's more space in the mix. Everything is more dimensional and pushed back, with a more relaxed sound signature.
I'll post some more impressions of cable comparisons (Amazon Basics Toslink vs AQ Carbon Toslink) if this thread takes off.
