I'm looking for a closed back headphone to use when I study and when people are around. My primary music of choice is metal (and most of its subgenres) and hard rock.

I've read the bass response on the M50 is very good, but I'm not a person that needs or requires a bass heavy headphone. That being said, I'm interested in the AKG sound and I think the K271 will deliver it. They are supposed to be neutral sounding, with balanced and not overpowering bass, though I read that both headphones are, for the most part, neutral sounding.

Which headphone would be a better choice? Looking to hear from people that have tried both.

Personally, I would go with the ATH-M50 in your situation. I found the K271 to be too thin for my rock tastes and returned it. The mids are nice, but overall it sounded lifeless to me. I much prefer the K240 MK II. But the ATH-M50 is better for me than both AKGs.
