Both are about the same price + shipping to canada. I'd say that about 50% of my music library is hip-hop, but the rest of my library is filled with anything from techno to classical. I've read great things about both and narrowed my search down to these 2, but I don't know which to chose now.

I listen to a lot of hip hop, dubstep and trip hop on the M50 and i find them to be fantastic, the bass goes really deep and responds very well to bass boosting as well.

I've done a comparison of the two, however I have only limited experience with the Q40 and the M50 is one of my faves.

The M50 is better IMO.

Q40 is I think a bit bloatier in bass but sounds less tight. M50 has more resolution and is clearer, also has better mids. The two are quite similar though but the M50 is better for me.

However I think the Shure SRH750 DJ is better than the M50.

With the SRH750 getting nice and cheap lately as well this is a good one to look at, i purchased my M50 from someone who picked up the SRH750 and found them superior.

I sold my M50 as well, haven't picked up an SRH750 yet either but I auditioned them briefly and even with just that brief audition of an unburned-in pair, I clearly found the SRH750 superior.

I havent heard the M50 yet, but i guess with all the FOTM hype, i have to now,  just to be cool..lol.

I havent heard the new Shure full-sized phones either, but i saw them in Guitar Center in the box...lol.

I love my Q40, and it sounds great really, but i havent compared.

M50 isn't FOTM, it has been around for a while now and represents a great value for under $100. Arguably the best value. And if you want to be cool, you will buy them. :)
