I play a lot of video games on my TV with this setup:

  1. JVC HARX900
  2. Sony STR-DE135 2 Channel Receiver

I'm not sure if, even though my Xbox is capable of producing 5.1, that my two channel receiver can deliver it too. I have seen a large amount of people using the Astro MixAmp, but since it's $140 and I always play in my home, I feel that I'd rather upgrade my receiver for a similar price. Also, I'm wary of anything branded as a "gaming" device. I have been spying this Sony 7.1 receiver and would highly prefer it over the Astro Mixamp if it's capable of performing the same function.

So here are my 3 questions:

  • Is my current receiver "downgrading" the 5.1 (from the Xbox) to two-channel stereo?
  • Does the Astro MixAmp do anything that the Sony 7.1 receiver doesn't? (I mean purely audio quality-wise)
  • Would I see an appreciable difference in upgrading from my current receiver to the new Sony 7.1?

Thank you in advance for helping me out. There is a lot of information and it's hard for me to not be fooled by sales and marketing.
