Astell&Kern A&ultima SP3000

The only item on my wishlist is for A&K to work with Roon on making ARC go around down sampling everything to 44.1 kHz.
From what I understand, Roon is internally testing ARC with the SP3000. As the SP3000 is Roon certified, the Roon engineering team has a player for internal testing of new software, etc. If I get more info, I will share.

I know, this is totally annoying, something that needs to be addressed. I have owned several A&K players, and the albums have never been expanded to show the songs within the albums. This makes scrolling insufferably long. I like to go to artist, then scroll through the albums, then find the album I wanna listen to, THEN expand it to see the songs or just play it from Track 1. Maybe @JasonNYC will see this request!
I've requested this be updated to the collapsible list like the other players since I beta tested the SP3000 back in August and it still hasn't been updated yet. I let the team from Korea that was at CanJam SoCal last month know that it needed to be done. It's on the list of updates, I am assuming it will probably be added in next firmware update sometime in December. Waiting for confirmation on when it will be updated.

what is going on with the volume wheel lock? This should have been available out of the box and doesn’t sound like an awfully difficult thing to implement given the fact it was available on your older DAPs.
Wheel Lock is available on the SP3000. I don't think it is in the quick settings notification bar by default and needs to be added. Settings ->Notification Panel. Tap and hold the icon and drag it to where you want it to appear in the list.

Hope all of those that celebrate Thanksgiving had a great holiday. I was away last week with no Internet access at all. I have been going through and answering stuff posted over the last week. Had 1200+ email notifications from the various Head-Fi threads alone. If I missed something, please let me know and I will answer.

Yah the EXT pairing is INCREDIBLE (to say the least) followed by my Indigo and KK!
Ya, it’s the deepest bass range I’ve ever heard from an IEM. I feel like I can almost feel a subsonic vibration in my skull.

The Kublai Khan on the other hand have amazing clarity and instrument separation. I had some classical music on and I felt like I was in the middle of the orchestra pit with instruments playing all around me

Hi Jason,

Thank you for your work in answering the community. It is very much appreciated.

Two questions:
1) the lights on the wheel, which change color depending on the format listened to, why it does not work with other applications (Qobuz for example) but only with the native player from AK? Will there be any change?
2) I can't find any glass protection for the screen on the market. They are all made of plastic. Do you have partners who offer glass screen protectors?

is roon ARC only for SP3000 or is that going be on SP2000 ?

I'm guessing SP3000 only, given the age and the android version of the SP2K.

Thanks, @JasonNYC, for all your input, as well!

I have to say, I’ve had two open Android DAPs - HiBy R6 Pro and iBasso DX320. I had nothing but problems when I tried installing apps from APK Pure and Google play. Different combinations of apps would goof everything up and I had to reset the players, etc.

But the SP3000…I love the simplicity and how everything works perfectly like iOS. I like neutron too but I intend to stay inside AK’s walled garden.

Well said

I also thought of IOS when I look at the AK system. I’m really happy with the SP3000 and I still have a lot of exploring to do to see what everything on the Dap does and the best way to get music on there. I have Tidal but I’m thinking about more permanent music. I’m still toying with the idea of getting the AK CD Ripper Mk2 so that I can get my music collection onto an SD card within the Dap. Not sure yet though.

Hein? 🤔 pas d'Android qui n'est pas paralysé.

I understand your concern, but let me help you appreciate a dedicated version of Android for a DAP. I'm not trying to convince you, but just to give you another perspective. Then you can make up your own mind.

Android is an OS that runs a lot of processes in the background like all OS. However, OS dedicated to telephones are very consuming of background processes precisely for telephony needs. I give you some examples:
- waiting thread to receive a phone call
- permanent analysis of the cellular network to find terminals
- notification engine
- print spooler
- etc...

This consumes battery power which is bad for our DAPs. But even worse, some threads have priority which can disturb the playback of music with micro-cuts. So with an impact that SQ level.

To have an OS dedicated to audio listening is, in my opinion, capital to have an optimized listening. Both at the level of playback to avoid micro-cuts or distractions and for the optimization of the battery. The optimization of the music listening process, upscaling, encoding is in my opinion strategic to produce a good restitution of the SQ. What a generic OS will not support correctly. It is reached more easily with an OS dedicated to this type of processing to avoid disturbances.

This approach of a specialized and optimized OS is not new. If you take Apple for example, with the maturity of iOS it has ended up specializing it in various variations:
- an OS for smartphones: iOS
- an OS for tablets: iPad OS
- an OS for watches: Apple Watch
- An OS for TV: Apple TV
- And, an OS for Music : IPod

It's certainly the same foundations but not at all the same use. This specialization is not a marketing game. But a reality about usage and optimization dedicated to usage.

The specialization allows us to bring the optimizations we need.

AK applies exactly the same strategy as Apple. The best OS dedicated to music to match with the best hardware dedicated to music. And it must be said, the maturity that AK presents on the SP3000 finally and definitively concretizes this vision.

Voilà, I hope I was able to help you by sharing another vision. Where you are certainly right, is that AK should create a web page to explain the interest of a dedicated OS and what is its vision to couple the best music OS with the best hardware.
