But is it worth getting since its my only amp? Or should I get the HE-500 or LCD-2 instead.

That depends very much on what kind of sound you want.
HE-6 has significantly more more output in the treble than the LCD-2 for instance.

The HE-6 sounds like the headphone I'm looking for. though my only worry is that the 71b won't drive it with authority, especially in the lower frequencies. That's probably why people think its bright combo.

The HE-6 needs more than a portable amp to sound its best. If you are stuck on using the SR-71B, I agree that the HE-500 would be a better choice.

For bass, you'll still get the texture and the note from a portable amp but the air of all the music will be less, as is for the bass impact.  HE-500 or even T1 for portable, HE-6 is my winner for desktop.  Of course if you have the HE6, then I'd get something else other than the HE-500.  It'll remind you that you have an inferior HE-6.

Bump.

Please recommend some solid state amps that are NOT speaker amps that can drive the HE-6.

So far all I've got is the DarkVoice and the SR71B.

Just for fun, money-no-object budget, but if there are budget/portable suggestions they would be most welcome!!

Well - I think this has been said before, but here it is:
Ray Samuels Dark Star is reportedly very good with the HE-6.
I have ordered Audio-gd Master-6, which is half the price and is also a pre amp.
Apart from those two I think there are very few hp amp that is capable of driving it fully.
HIFIMAN is on the way with an amp too, but the prototype was an integrated amp if I recall correctly.
The rest is speaker amps.
HE-6 needs about at least 6-7 Watts in 50 Ohms and very few dedicated hp amps are capable of delivering that.

In balanced mode the SR-71b offers plenty of volume for the HE-6, and bass is not bad.  However, it is a little brighter than the HE-500 in that combo, and my Marantz 2240 receiver is a better choice for HE-6.  The LCD-2 rev1 are a little darker than HE-500 out of the SR-71b, and with the HE-500 being just right I use those most with the SR-71b.  I keep the HE-6 in my basement rig with my Marantz receiver.

Thanks for all your input HeadphoneAddict, I just bought the LCD-2. Not for the hype, but because I believe it will suit my musical tastes. But I will be getting the HE-6 in the future.

I apologize if this has been posted.
I am using my Balancing Act of Eddiecurrent.com in balanced input and balanced output.
I use the Weiss DAC 202 and has set the output to 3V.   The Balancing Act can drive the
HE6 and AKG K1000 beautifully at 1-2 O'clock.  The soundstage is big with WE300B's power tubes
and 6F8G Kenrad as driver.
