guys, currently looking at a prospective trade for a pair of akg k601's, would a total airhead by headroom power these fine?

No, not well at all. Mine will just keep blinking at me non-stop if I raise it's volume too high. Or when the song has actual bass. It's even harder to drive than my K702, so I think a full desktop amp is a must.
 
I use several different sources with my Asgard. When I connect an Oppo 981 DVD/CD player up the volume only needs to be at 50%. When I want to use a docked Ipod Touch I need to crank it to 90%! A cheap DAC gets the volume higher, but barely.
