i went and looked at the data sheet on the alps site but had a hard time deciphering some of the pins. i understand that the six which are grouped together are for ground/out/in like most other six pin pots...

but how about the other two pins which are on the other end? can someone help me determine what these are for please? thank you.

They are the lugs for the single pole single throw power switch. Connect the red lead from your battery to one, then run a wire from the other lug on the pot to the batt+ pad on the board.
