He probably just routed the hot and cold wires from the other driver through the head band, a really nice compromise actually.
The craftsmanship is really good, you can only see the marks if you look into the connector, too bad you can only run it in balanced mode now as most other balanced headphones can still be run single ended.
The headphones themselves are balanced, but as I said in my original post, I have a separate (almost identical sans termination) 4-pin LEMO > 1/8" SE cable that I use with my UDA-1 and X7. I'm going to use the exact same cables with the balanced K7XX with a mini-XLR to LEMO adapter.
As far as the wiring goes, the headphones use a ribbon cable that shares a common ground. He couldn't just drop in his own wire, he had to modify the existing ribbon cable as as you describe. The 4-pins are indeed 2 for L and 2 for R.
