AKG K702 (The Classic) vs. K612 Pro (The Upstart) – Review and Comparison

Makes me sad to see K601 and K612 going for $130-$150 new or slightly used. That's just plain wrong!

I think they're worth much more than that. The Q701 can be had for as low as $235, but the K601 isn't really any worse, just different.

$175-$200 is perfect.

More people need to try them..

A lower price for the same quality can never be wrong, unless of course if you purchased with the intention to resell sooner or later.  I wouldn't complain if the SR009 dropped a couple of thousand.

I wonder why it's ignored, everything I heard about them, makes me think they are in the Q701 tier but just different. Hopefully more people get them, I plan on getting a pair of K612's as my next headphone, I will be curious how it will compare to my MA900. I am also curious to see if it's better than the K240 or just different, because I honestly don't feel the MA900 or HD 598 are better than the K240 just very different. I am hoping the K612 falls somewhere between the Q701 and K240 in sound signature. I have read that the K612 has noticeably fuller bass than the K601 leading me to think the K612 is different sounding than the K601.

IMO they should be in the same tier - but it's clear AKG thinks they are a tier below (ie the slightly lower build quality and lack of detachable cable). Sonically I agree with you though - slightly lower resolution, but slightly more natural sounding - = same tier but different focus.

I haven't heard the K601 - so unfortunately have no information either way (if there are differences).

I found AKG a little weird in how they classify their products, some of their lower tier stuff competes very well with their higher tier products, it's more different sound signatures than worse sound quality, and differing build quality too. I want to try the K612 because I didn't like the center imaging issues and upper midrange glare on the Q701, I also get the feeling K612 will respond better to tubes as well. I've always liked AKGs because I find their midrange musical even when lacking some warmth, but when they have warmth to their sound, I find them very musical.

That's just what I read from someone who had both the K601 and K612.

I just received the K612 about an hour ago, I'm very impressed so far, they seem to be a step up from my other headphones. They have plenty of bass, more than the K240 and MA900, so they are not bass lean in any way.

There is something 'special' about their tonality - isn't there!

Yes there is, I'm noticing the voices have the right tonality, I always noticed voices both male and female seemed a little too bright to be real sounding on most headphones but they sound just right to me on the K612. The subbass caught me off-guard as my other two headphones don't really have much of it.

Interesting... Do you think the k612 is harsher in the treble area vs k240, the only think i dislike about them is the sibilance.

No, the K612 is smoother in the treble area than the K240. That's my complaint with the K240 as well. The more I listen to them, the more they seem like a better K240 to me.
