Let me join the club, I also have an AKG K601. Had it for more than two years now and am still very happy with it. Only currently I am looking for a good portable as well. I really love the sound and feel of the K601, is there anything like it in the portable world?

I also have had K601's more than two years now and I use them every day. Very happy still but I'm getting ideas to try Q701 :D
As for portable I just bought AKG K420 and I like them a lot. I use them mostly for jogging/running. A bit more bass and not as bright as K601 but midrange and soundstage is nice.

nope :p

but as I totally loath the bigger AKGs (anything not in a K24X housing) I tried covering the whole front of the driver-grill with a less then 1mm thick felt... and now they don't shout as much as they used to. Oh, it was a K400, but the K700 and K600 families have a similar flaw, you might just try it. (in b 4 Sennheiser-Veil)

Wonder if the new K612 Pros are made in Austria or China?

Considering the '1' in K 612 is most likely to denote this new pro line – which seems simply a remarketing of the old line – you're left with an actual increment of one over the old K 601, and in the case of AKG, an increment of one typically denotes a shuffling of colors.

I have been reading German HiFi forum in hope that I could get a lead on new k612 ear pads. There was an impression that states that k612 and k712 series are all about push in the bass, so if that is true, it's not only the color of the pads that is changed.

Just saw HiFiGuy's unboxing videos. The K612 is a K601 with black earpads? Everything else looks identical.

Well since AKG has become master of deception it's kind of hard to tell what's going on but to me it looks like the bass for soundstage compensation, if the source is trustworthy.

The only one around here who can tell it for sure is the HiFiGuy and he is not telling, hehe, AKG would never send another hp for a review

You mean they changed the earpads to the "memory foam" ones which reduce soundstage in exchange for a bass boost.

If it's anything like the K702/65 then the headphones themselves are identical - the difference in sound is from swapping the earpads.

Clearly you don't understand these are end game!

But really, all the changes were from pads. AKG is just milking these products to the last dime.

I don't blame akg for changing the pads. They have been putting the wrong pads on their top tier models for years. Swapping pads from 601-702 and vice versa makes that very obvious (each are improved).

BTW the K612 doesn't use memory foam. I asked AKG on Facebook and they replied.
I don't think the K601 would work well with memory foam pads anyway. I doubt anyone has tried it.

I hate to say it but I agree with you. Well, only if the K712 is not a clone of the K702 Anniversary.
Actually I'm glad they decided to release a normal version of the K702 Anniversary. It must have been popular enough to re-release it.
They should have gotten ridden of those bumps a long time ago.

Most likely the K612 sounds the same as the K601 though since it looks like it has the same pads.

I don't have a problem with AKG doing this I guess since they're just giving people what they're asking for.
I really don't need any more bass from the Q701 though. You sacrifice too much else when you add more bass to the Q701 IMO.
