I've read some reviews saying the K271 is very bright with sparkly highs, and others saying that the treble is very rolled off and the emphasis is almost entirely on the midrange... Is the treble actually rolled off? If it is, is there another headphone in a similar price-range that has sparkly highs whilst also having a very damped (some would say bass-shy) bass response...?

i own the k271mkII, highs are not really rolled off but on the freq  end like 10k yes.
less highs than the k501 but more mids and upper bass.
its very good for voices. for me its n-shaped

the k550 is as you wish, neutral i would say, more treble on the end + less mids + less upper bass than 271

but why  and what for do you want and closed phone?
a open phone would be easy to find with your pref.
