First off I'm a broke student, secondly I'm importing a bunch of stuff from Germany, and I'm making it worth by while by buying a few cans.

(I already own a Denon D2k, and a Asus Xonar essence STX)

1
I can get the AGK K242HD and save some cash (possibly put towards a second DAC, Hisound RoCoo P, or opamps [to fix the d2k+asus disaster pairing])

2
I can get an AKG K701 (the q701 is 3x the price, and just out of my budget.)

3
I can get an Ultrasone HFi-780

This will all be for home use. I love my denons sound signiture, but I'm not afraid to explore, and theres sumthing about AKGs that turn me on, so i atleast want one in my collection.

The K24x cans (I understand the K242HD, K240 Studio, and K240 MKII are sonically identical) have slightly inflated mid-bass and full mids, though they are flatter than some reviews might lead you to believe. I have both the D2000 and the K240 Studio at work. While the D2000 is technically slightly better, the groovy, non-fatiguing K240 gets 80% of my head time. The K240 is about as easy to drive as the D2000.

The K701 has very lean bass, and an overall analytical sound. They're difficult to properly amp. I tried to love the K701 for a couple of years, but it never happened. I gave them to my dad. The K701 sounds nothing like the K240. I wish I could find headphones with the K701's detail retrieval and the K240 sound signature (the HD650 is close).

I haven't heard any of the Ultrasones.

Thanks, yeah and at half the price of the K701, I think the K242HD is a nice pick.
Thanks for the input

Depends what you'll be listening to. For rock I'd pick the 240s, unless you need a lot of detail. They can't compare with the 70X in terms of detail and clarity. Didn't care for the 702 with rock however. k240S is definitely warmer than the 70X, which is too tilted towards the bright end of the spectrum for my tastes. They both have nice smooth mids but the 240 mids are thicker....and there's a lot more bass with those.

Ironic that s o many people have one of the AKG 70X but no one particularly recommends it, and at half the price the 240s or 242 are recommended.
Ill save the extra cash and put it towards opamps, or a uDac2-se or iBasso d12 or sumthing
