ohh..hmm that sorta makes sense. BUT .. HOW do I do this? where do I place the leads of the multimeter then?

connect a Y-cable to the card, one end to the cans and the other for measuring.
Anywhere where you can get to Ground and out is good actually. If you don't have a Y-cable you can sacrifice an extension cord. peel of the protective outer layer and carefully expose the three copper wires with some distance apart along the length of the wire so to avoid accidental shorts.
