Hi all.

I was wondering what part of the 6L6GC people refer to as being a 'black plate' or a 'grey plate'. I'm not sure what part they are talking about.

Can anyone explain this?

They are talking about the plate (chuckle) its the huge metal thing around everything else.

Black plate tubes often (usually) have lower distortions than grey-plate tubes.

You will also see descriptions such as "solid plate" and "mesh plate" in some tubes. They mean exactly what they say. Solid plate GENERALLY indicates a plate with no holes in it when the most common type of that tube has some holes (6l6 generally has a few big holes in the plate....) mesh plate ORIGINALLY meant the plate was actually made of woven mesh like in a window-screen, but now generally means perforated sheet-metal.
