I spoke to someone claiming he has a pair of hi-end
cans bought between 10 & 15 years ago...that have
5 electrostatic diaphragms per side !! He didn't
remember brand name. Does this beast exist??

The thing would be much bigger than the Sony R10s if they did exist...I don't think it's even possible.

Might it be the AKG K-340?

The Systems are special, it is a two way system. Electret part for treble and dynamic part for bass,- and 5! passive membranes for bass-reproduction. The electronics for the electrets is all in the system.

It must be the AKG K340 they were incorrectly referring to...

What was incorrect? I count 5 electrostatic diaphragms.

The diaphragms are passive not active. That means they are neither dynamic nor are they electrostatic. There is one electrostatic "tweeter" and one dynamic "woofer" and five passive ratiators.

Wow, nice pictures revealing an interesting design. Do you have detailed pictures of the insides of other headphones?

Where is the electrostat in the pictures? I see the step-up transformer apparently hooked up to the large green transducer, so if that's the electrostat, then where is the dynamic? Very interesting design!

Ya, I have these... got Vert's actually. Some may find them a little lean on bass, but I think they sound just fine... pretty old though, gotta take good care of 'em
