I just received this 4pin XLR to 3.5mm adaptor.

This is my first such item and I hear sound only on the right side of the headphones (HD800 with 4 pin XLR cable)

I hooked the 3.5mm end with my Fiio X3 and laptop and they all sound the same: only the right side, even that is super low in volume. Any ideas? The adaptor is faulty? Should I send it back>?

A quick Google search - found FiiO X7 is compatible with TRRS. Are you sure that your FiiO X3 is compatible? I would assume the 3.5mm end should be TRS. Certainly would need TRS to be compatible with typical laptop headphone jack. Like this:
