What would your (3) Three ideal gain settings in a Portable Amp that would accommodate all your sources and Headphones you planned to use the Amplifier with?
Thanks for asking, Phil.
1 or 2 and 5 or 6 completely do it for me.
1 or 2 for IEMs and low impedance (< 50 ohm) phones, and my favorite buds (120 ohm).
5 or 6 for my highest impedance phones (300 ohm) with my weakest source (the on-board audio chip set on a work-issue computer).
This has been bugging me for a while... I don't have any big high impedance cans - if a gain of 5 or 6 is good for driving 300 ohm 'phones, why does there seem to be many amps with a gain of ~10? Why so high? I would think that would make those amps only suitable for a small number of cans - effectively limiting the market for those amps, no? It seems counter productive for the amp makers.
