Hi All

I am back somewhat feeble now but plan on working on amps again in a limited amount.
Designing a OTL amp that will drive the Caldera planar headphone properly as well as other high impedance phones.
Going to use 7236 or 6336 output tubes with 6J5/L63 drivers better sounding than any 6SN7. might be too high of current to use 6AS7s.
Did build a amp that uses 4 E130L output tubes to drive the Caldara but these are hard to get.

Will be good to talk to all of you again.
Glenn
Brilliant to see you back here again mate! Totally made my day.

I will get that amp back to you.
My problem now is I am to feeble to pick the amp up in the box.
I will make no more amps with 3 transformers and a couple of chokes just to heavy now.
Glenn

Glenn, it is great to see you back here and able to work on amps! I hope your health continues to hold steady.

Hi

Have you taken the bottom off?
Might have a bad plate resistors on the 6SN7. At a point I thought that boutique parts would be better. RONG many unreliable.
I used Amtrans AMRG resistors on the plate load of the 6SN7 many have gone bad drifting when they worm up.
Replace them with a 22K ohm 2watt resistors.
I have the bottom off now. It's on my kitchen counter now. I'll take a look at the resistors. Glad to hear you are up an around!

5CU4 is a great rectifier tube for the OTL but draws over 3amps filament current might overheat the transformer in other amps.
Great to see that you’re back Glenn!

Welcome back all the best for a speedy recovery.

In my never ending quest for both poverty and maximizing my Glenn OTL, scored 4 WE 421A & Soviet 6S5S. Using Tube Amp Doctor GZ34 as rectifier, which is really similar to (and slightly better than) the Mullard GZ34 as this is a Mullard/Valvo design reproduction. Made sure the old Glenn spreadsheet said 4 of these (or 5998) is just fine. Doubles as a space heater! I shared with Zach that the Atticus with the WE 421A is just mind blowingly good, especially for being their cheapest and oldest model. I spend less and less time with the Atticus as the Verite Closed and Atrium Closed are just so much more detailed, but with the WE they really aren't far behind.

Glad to talk to you guys again.

Have to build some amps to stop me from going crazy.
In hospital for months takes a toll.
Being bed ridden and watching TV can't do it anymore. Don't work anymore so just sit Infront of the TV losing my mind.
Do listen to music too but have to do something. Only problem is I am feeble now hard to pick up the amp especially when in a box.

Glenn

Wowza! Glad to see you post again, Glenn! If you'll build me another amp I'll come and pick it up right off of your workbench. No need to lift it into a box!

Hey @2359glenn welcome back to Head-Fi! Glad you are doing better.

While you were gone I built a 6J5 / 6528 OTL. One 6528 per channel with the sections paralleled, 275mA bias. Output Z down to 11ohms! I prepare for it to explode every time I power it up.

Speaking of 6J5s, I recently bought a quad of 6S2S (from this listing) and tried them out in my Glenn's 6SN7 spot, with a Deyan adapter. After 6 hours or so, I noticed the metal XLR end of my headphone cable was hot to the touch, and the amp housing was much hotter than it's ever been (and since switching back to dual 7193s, no issues). I don't see 6S2S's on @Zachik 's guide (thank you, btw). I'm now also worried about using the quad in my HA-300b - anyone have experience using those on the Glenn OTL?

Mine has native 6J5 sockets and I've not noticed an issue with the 6S2S in them, but never tried using 2 and adapter on my 6SN7 socket. Check with WesS because I think he was using those in his HA-300b at one point. The 6S5S if you can get them sound even better than the 6S2S/6C2C in both my amps though the 6S2S are still excellent especially for their low price. I've had problems with Deyan's adapters on my Glenn rectifier for the GEC U18/20 and with my 6J5 adapters from him (used on Envy) some tubes are finicky and are not with the ebay Mrs X adapters. I've had issues with the socket savers from him too.

Are you using 2 or 4 6S2S in the 6SN7 socket?

I’m using two, just like I do with the 6J5’s.
