0404 USB with alternate power supply?

It's pretty obvious from the size and light weight of the 0404 USB's wall wart that it is a switching mode unit.

Has anyone tried to operate the 0404 USB with a linear regulated unit such as a TREAD, or an Elpac designed for 5VDC output?
