    purpose of a preamp?

    Is there any reason for me to use the preamp feature of my LD MK III for my m-audio av40 speakers?  Im not exactly too sure what the purpose of a preamp is.  Based on the wikipedia description (which isn't too helpful), I don't need it since the gamma-2 provides a line out?

    Tube rolling for the hlly mk-III

    connecting momentum headphones to little dot mk 3

    when I connect to the headphone amp, I get a very low volume weird sound but when I press the middle button on the iphone thingy it works fine (but I have to (hold) press it continually to listen, otherwise it goes back to a low /weird volume   yet when i plug into my computer all works fine...
