Well, my wife just said she'd use my iPod if I got the Sony - so, I may be able to fill you guys in on/after the 10th ... I'm seriously considering picking one of these things up, I just miss my bass ...

I live in Tokyo, close to Saitama prefecture but still in Tokyo ... It takes me about an hour to get to Akiharbara by train, but I can probably pick the Sony up at an electronics store about 10 minutes from my house ...

I can say that the bigger your library gets, the more Sonicstage starts to suck very, very badly. With iTunes, it's the other way around. I know improvements are in the pipeline but they really have their work cut out for them.

OK, I just got the go-ahead from wife to buy the Sony, so I'm all clear over here ...

But, before I do: you mentioned that you've been using the HD1 ... What are your impressions? I mean, as far as SQ?

edit: just saw your reply, and yes - I'll let you know. But, the Japanese don't actually have a word for "deal" so I sincerely doubt I'll find anything lower than MSRP. lol ...

Also, I'll be using my E5c's with the Sony (not just stock buds), if that makes any difference (as far as SQ goes)

Of course we have several words for "Deal"... You're an ex-pat then? In that case you might be out of luck

You may need the EQ with the Sony... to lower the bass. The E5's are perfect for the slightly lean iPod. With the HD1 it occasionally goes a bit too far. SQ (not the flavour) is not bad. Overall it's a lush tone at 'flat' compared to the iPod, and technically (although I didn't really try to compare in audiophile mode between the two, I had better things to do) I suppose it's comparable.

If you have a reasonably large selection of music, I guarantee you'll miss iTunes.

I was joking with the "deal" comment - just making reference to the fact that most retailers in Tokyo tend to view MSRP as gospel - they rarely drop below it. Case in point: the Shure E5c's - at any of the major electronics retailers here, they're going for Y55000 yen, which is about $550USD.

Anyway I'm glad to hear that I might have to lower the bass, at least I'll be able to do that - as opposed to the iPod with the non-existant bass ... I would much rather lower the bass than not have it to begin with!

As for my music library, I actually HATE iTunes - I only use it when I have to transfer to my iPod, otherwise I never open it ... I see it as a necessary evil, it's inconvenient I guess, but doesn't really bother me. In that respect, I would imagine I'll feel the same about SonicStage. (actually, I already have SonicStage installed, I have a Sony LAM-Z03 NetMD unit now, so I use it for that) ...

I don't like sonic stage. Bug filled program.

I don't like iTunes. Not really an optimized program. (Chugs on a 1.8ghz, 512mb ram, 7200rpm harddrive, computer)

Get rid of the added "essential" software, and we could have a winner.

What exactly does this mean? That we need to re-rip our entire music collection with the Sony supplied software? Or that the existing files on our computers needs to go through the Sony software that adds on some kind of tag/encryption? Is this sort of like the where previously Sony just converst mp3 to Atrac before loading the song to the player? Seriously why can't ther just do drag and drop? How freakin hard can it be?

And IMO the HD3 doesn't look as good as the HD1 or HD2. They didn't even bother to match top and bottom edge plastics with metallic paints that matches the metal body.

I'd have to agree - IMO the HD2 was the best looking unit, but on the other hand, the 5-way button on the HD3 look like it's a little easier to use ...

As for Sony allowing drag-n-drop, I really don't see that happening - Sony has too great an interest in protecting their other assets, I'm sure the last thing a major record label wants to do is to give people an easy and convenient way to share music illegally among their friends. As long as the HD3 doesn't require re-encoding of MP3's, I'll be happy - encrypted is fine (a slight pain in the *** but not a deal-breaker, IMO) as long as the quality of my MP3's is not reduced in any way. I spent far too long ripping my CD collection at high bitrates for Sony to come in and re-encode everything ...

I use Jriver Media Center, and I believe it blows everything else out of the water, except for ripping cds. I haven't tried foobar though mainly because it doesn't have the media orgization features that I like.
