why is it that the bitrate is so different from track to track

on my Webern CD on track is encoded at 267, another at 406 etc

craziness!

any explanation?

Some songs can be compressed more than others.

Apple lossless can compress down to 267? That's um... pretty unbelieveable. Maybe a track with one instrument that's mostly silence?

I've seen flac kick out a few ~400kbps tracks, but those usually are just jack black talking to kyle.

267 kbps for a 1:15 song... does that make a difference?

it is webern, so in terms of actual sound, not a whole lot going on.

Uh oh, less than 320kbps?! Not good, I have this smart playlist collecting all the lossless stuff by collecting files above 320kbps... the smallest number showing up *in that playlist* being 352kbps. Will have to rethink that. The playlist is sorta useless anyway, but I wanted to use it for orientation when the big re-rip comes...

A smart friend told me that the more high frequencies a track has the higher the required bitrate will be. Notice how low you can go with audio books? just one human voice.
