wow, i guess i expected a little too much from the cmoy, considering the rave reviews this thing gets "It's powerful enough to drive very inefficient headphones to thunderous volumes from even weak sources" (tangentsoft) anyways i really want the 580's because i can get a pretty good deal from a canadian head-fier which would save my butt in customs fees. what kind of amp would you suggest to be used? would a bithead or airhead do the trick? I am not afraid to pony up a little cash to get a real sweet sounding setup. thanks!

Mine was expensive because I had him put an AOS DAC and a diamond buffer in it. I don't even use the dac, I use the chaintech 710 because I like how it sounds better!

Another vote for Alessandro/Grado. The sound is great for rock, and if you're confident in your soldering skills you can replace the mile-long-and-nearly-as-thick cable with ease. Just baby those things... I'm particularly abusive to my equipment, which has caused some problems with my SR-60.

As far as comfort goes, you should have no problems with MS-1 or SR-80. If anything, a pair of comfy pads might help you in cold weather, since those things are so thick they'll keep your ears warm.

as of right now I'm looking into buying a used set of 580's from a fellow head-fier in canada or the us. my main concern is now knowing the cmoy will not do a good job of powering the 580's, because my budget doesnt really allow for that much amp. Would something like a mint do the trick?

Hehe, go ahead and buy the 580s…and then one of three things will happen:

1)You will like them. Great…end of story.

2)You will not like them and the sell them in the sales forum giving us the opportunity to buy a good set of phones at a terrific price. Great...for us.

3)You will not like them for portable usage (but you will keep them for home use) and you will be forced to buy some portable cans. Great…you will then have two headphones. The more the merrier.

i will consider them in a future if these phones work out for me and i keep interest in head-fi.

Earbuds:
Right in your price range are a pair of Audio Technica CM7's. I just got them a couple of days ago and they've changed my mind about what kind of sound is possible from an earbud.

Looking silly:
Speaking of AT... maybe folks would get a kick out of seeing you walking around with the A900's sittin' atop your head.

And, hey, if you can get them to stay put, you won't even need that amp.

A900s improve with an amp.

Consider cheapish buds like the Sharp MD33 for portable use (cheap but pretty good) and 580s for home use. Or the CM7s that MM said, which i've never head about but are worth investigating.

btw MM can you compare those buds with other buds (Shure/EX71s would be nice) or full sized cans?

i like that attitude

besides right now i am in the process of getting out of another hobby (remote control cars) to get into head-fi. what will most likely happen is me ending up with both the ms-1's and the hd 580's and still hungry for more!

I'll be writing a full review sometime this weekend. The only other 'phones I have that are at all worth mentioning are the MX550's from Senn and Sony's MDR-CD777's (old, but pretty good - think V6's, which I suspect they're related to - they look similar and sound signature descriptions sound earily similar). I'll make comparisons over a range of musical styles and recording qualities.
