Sony MDR-1000X

I wanted to file a quick report after a long-haul flight with the MDR-1000X. An 11-hour flight, followed by a couple of hours layover, followed by a 1-hour flight.

Conclusion: these headphones are amazing. I wore them the entire time. I slept several hours with them on; the power never switched off, as long as the source iPhone was powered on (not playing anything), the NC worked and the headphones didn't switch off. The comfort is just perfect for me, I never felt tired or sore wearing them, I was able to sleep (as comfortably as one can in economy), and I never felt the urge to take them off and put them away.

The level of peace these headphones gives is just phenomenal. When you take them off, you realise how much racket the headphones are actually protecting you from. Ambient mode voice is also incredibly good -- it allows you to overhear everything that's going on (conversations, announcements on the plane) while still blocking out all the background noise. During takeoff and landing it's perfect for the numerous announcements.

All this while providing amazing sound. I've never listened to so much music since I bought these headphones.

For anyone reading all the complaints on this thread, I highly recommend you ignore and just buy. These headphones are uh-mayzing.

Easily my best buy in a very long time in terms of customer satisfaction.

these are definitely on my radar, along with the b&w p7 (heck even p9) and b&o h9

...i tried on my sony mdr 7520 closed studio cans against the audeze sines on the wkend...sines
are pretty sweet: more balanced and less bass boominess than the 7520.

think it's time to treat myself to a new pair of  more modern closed cans that i can use
on the road (have open senn hd650 for home)...wired or wls..nice to have that option

Well it is more or less the same thing being said by now... It's pretty clear to me at least. We can go ion debating forever bt it's clear the sonys are up on top.

Except the Sonys can creak, can't be listened to over USB, and have fewer features than the Sennheisers.
Also, with Sennheiser all parts can be replaced - and easily bought.
And their customer service is excellent. So headphones for the long term.

How does Sony stack up in that regard? Or Bose?

To put it into perspective, I owned the Momentum 2 Wireless - and had ear pads issues. Contacted Sennheiser - took a while, but they sent a new pair out to me - brand new lambs leather ear pads - no proof of purchase required.

That makes shelling out £300+ on headphones feel much better.

The QC35 do seem very comfortable and light, but they look and feel so cheap compared to the Sonys and I imagine the Sennheisers too.

Oh, what people never seem to mention about ANC, you can sing while wearing your headphones!
So it's not just for travelling.

One thing to note about the 550 is:
1) Need to be folded flat to turn it off, so always remember to do it lest you'll find yourself wanting to have it for a quick trip only to find out it's dead
2) ANC of lesser quality than the cream of the crops, though has better flexibility than the QC35, it still has less than the Sony

Other than that it'd be about each person's individual preference

Is there an advantage in performance or sound using a high-end DAP like the Sony NW-WM1Z to drive a Bluetooth headphone like the MDR-1000X (wirelessly and ANC on)?

That pairing allows you to use LDAC for the Bluetooth link which is supposedly better than AptX (can't confirm nor deny it).

This LDAC is a Sony thing?  Can one get it using iPhone?

It is a Sony thing.  I'm not aware of any other vendor picking it up.  Not certain if it has a hardware component or is strictly a software enhancement to bluetooth.  LDAC is available on a number of Sony's DAPs and phones.

Well I was going to try the 1000X just to satisfy my curiosity. But an accident has ended that dream for now. Maybe next year. Some stores are now carrying it so who knows, maybe I will be able to hear it without having to just buy it.
