Review on HtC 10 and Sound quality (AQstic Dedicated Integrated DAC)

Q-Jays or Panasonic RP-HDE10-s and Neutron with a little EQ tweak for each does the trick for me. I have couple other IEMs and earbuds but these seem to be the best combo w/ the HTC 10. Also I have to use the preamp in neutron for volume because the HTC10's has terribad 16-step stock android volume control... it's almost enough to ruin it as an audio playback gizmo for me since I much prefer using hardware buttons.

I use a personal hearing customization, Dolby turned off, and Poweramp ver. 704.

Will look into Poweramp. I mostly use spotify atm (hangs head in shame) but certain albums I do have in better quality to enjoy them to the full.
Having experiencing the old m7 , m8 till owning 2 set of one max . My 0.20 cents conclusion is , as far as music is concerned , you'll never go wrong with the Flagship HTC mobile . Seriously , one doesn't even need a amp for it , just plug n play with the iem is more than enough juice for some .
Lately I had been plug n play with my beloved ASG 2.5 with the one max without the help of a amp . Still , it feel good .

Noted!

Ah, I explained poorly, I meant the music player, i.e. streaming service, music app with 320/FLAC files etc.

I mostly use Spotify at the moment so was wondering if I was overthinking the decision to avoid the Samsung S7 but I do prefer HTC anyway.

Ah just Neutron player then. Been meaning to try out Poweramp and the Foobar apps as well. Streaming from Bandcamp and Soundcloud app for checking out new stuff.

I'm not really an audiophile but don't think there's anything wrong with Spotify though, at least in HQ setting? Plenty of people on head-fi use it at least. Personally just prefer to have music files stored locally without DRM, usually try to go flac or 320/v0 mp3.

Great info, I had the HTC One M8 back in the day too and loved it but after a year or so the battery started tonking and it overheated a lot.

I think what I am going to do is get a rolling sim only contract for now with my provider and then I can re-assess the situation when the next HTC flagship is announced next month.

My contract provider in the UK doesn't stock the HTC 10 and I don't want to spend almost £500 on the HTC 10 buying the device when the new model is a couple of months away.

Out of curiousity, how do you chaps with the HTC 10/V20 listen to your music to take advantage of the great improved sound playback?

I see. Ok. I luckily didn't have any overheating and/or battery issues, but I only had it for about 6 months before upgrading to the Sony Xperia Z3, which was the lst Sony phone to be made available via T-Mobile.

Ok that's cool. IF the HTC 10's successor is NOT a phablet (aka, below 5.5" screen), and the specs measure up to my standards lol, then I may very well upgrade again too when it's released.

Well that's the thing.........we don't know EXACTLY when the new model will be released as of yet. It sux b/c HTC chose to not release the newly announced U Ultra until March, which means the 10's successor will PROBABLY NOT come out in March/April like the HTC flagships usually do. So I'm guessing summer earliest?! Could even be later too. Hopefully we know more when MWC happens in late Feb. But that is why I got the 10 now b/c I need a phone that DOESN'T have a crappy battery on it now, and I don't know for sure if I'll be upgrading again this year or not. A lot of the rumors on the new model are saying it will be a phablet, so that makes me feel less motivated to upgrade. lol

Well IMO the best and ONLY option is Poweramp mindy. It's not free, but it doesn't really cost that much considering it sounds better AND is easier to use than most players out there. And I've tried SEVERAL out too, but Poweramp outdoes them all! First the get the trial (base) version here, then the unlocker app here so you have the full version. It comes with a 10-band EQ which is nice as well as many other features. If you get it and have questions, feel free to PM me.

I use headphones though. So even though I feel the 10 will prob be strong enough to drive my 32 ohm AKG K551s, I still won't know FOR sure until it comes in and I test it out. I have some Hi-Res albums which were remastered at a quieter volume, so it's those that I'm most concerned about. But since the V20 has about the same output on headphones as the 10, and the V20s in Aux/External Device Detected mode were strong enough (though barely), it should be ok.

Yes, IMO. And I love this phone with my 64Audio U8's. Power and punch. It's the perfect audio player for me. Just don't know if I want to root yet.

Ok. But is there a Dolby setting for the speakers and another one for the headphones too? I thought the Dolby option was only for the speakers. Please clarify if there's one for the headphones too.

Thanks.

Thanks.

When I plug in my headphones, the Dolby indicator is checked. So I assume there's a Dolby for headphones.

Ok that's what I was thinking too, cuz I know there is a Dolby for the BoomSound speakers too. And here is confirmation of that, and the headphone one as well.

So I'll leave the Speakers one and Headphones/IEM one off.

Thanks again ZMan2k2!!!!

Where's the setting that shuts Dolby?

Just the HTC Boomsound with Dolby setting afaik- there is a notification/icon whenever audio is playing, clicking that will take you to the menu. or going through settings menu it's under 'Phone' settings. It's good for the speakers imo.

Doesn't seem to work for me... The setting under "device" gives me the option to toggle between HTC BoomSound with Dolby/music mode internal speakers and BoomSound theater mode, also with Dolby, don't get any checkbox or other option to disable Dolby here, and haven't found a different setting for this.

I guess it's forced on for speakers? To adjust the headphones setting they need to be plugged in- the menu option automatically changes to the on/off switch for headphones and will remember your setting next time they are plugged in. If you do a long press and release the menu listing there is a submenu with a checkbox for the 'dolby headphone effects' and if you click on that option there are some presets for HTC branded headphones , this submenu is also where the personal audio profile EQ setup wizard is located.

Personally just leave all this stuff off, but it can be fun sounding sort of like the sony's ClearAudio+ thing.
