New DAP from HisoundAudio : The Studio 6

I am doing some listening and comparisons with the Mojo on my SE5 Ultimate. I use the "Mode A". I thought the modes were gains but apparently not, more like different sound signatures according to HSA.

The verdict so far is that the S6 perfectly holds its own vs. the Mojo. The Mojo might have slighly airier sound and sparklier highs, but I have to concentrate to hear a difference. Will test further today on more tracks and complete this post.

Complementary information:

  1. I would say that the Paw Gold and the S6 share quite close signature, i.e. neutral and detailed
  2. It is hard to pinpoint differences between the two with my SE5. I would say the Mojo sounds slightly sharper, bringing details more forward. The S6 doesn't smooth out details at all, but they are not quite as crisp as with the mojo, but they are still crisper than on the Cowon P1 for instance
  3. This makes the Mojo slighly slightly airier overall, but the differences are really minimal. This can also make the Mojo more fatiguing / harsh with bad mastering
  4. In terms of stage, stage width seems comparable, once again with a bit more air for the Mojo
  5. In terms of depth, it seems the Mojo has the edge, not necessarily in dimension, but in terms of layering. The differences are VERY subtle but it does seem the proximity of each instrument is easier to pinpoint on the Mojo

Major issues on the UI:
  1. Whether you play in an album, a playlist or a folder, it seems impossible to play files in the right order. My files are impeccably tagged, and numbered 01, 02, 03, etc. I have tried all options and playmode (I think). So the player is more or less unusabe to listen to an album or several tracks in a row
  2. The browsing by tag is more or less useless. It is impossible to truly navigate by album or artist
  3. When you are playing a track, it is impossible to go backup to the album / playlist level

My preliminary feeling: if / when they manage to correct the UI issues, this player is going to be a major contender on the DAP market for those who do not need sophisticated functions such as WIFI / Blue Tooth / Album Art / Streaming. The mix of SQ / power / size / price is ultra competitive.

Will say more after a while.

From where did you ordered the S6? I saw it on Penon audio at $549

I ordered it direct from Jack himself. I negotiated a price which is far less than Penon price. Anyone can contact them via this email: service@hisoundaudio.com

Just reference this thread and see what happens. Jack can be quiet generous with his discount. He is quiet proud of this particular DAP to and a dual BA that they also developed. He was kind enough to give me a sample for the IEM which I honestly did not want as I told him I probably will not have time to review it. Sellers either hate me or learn to love me, I love to bargain.

Thank you a thousand times

I will send him a email, and if the price is good, I'll be part of the S6's community :grinning:

It diverts back to your previous comment...

Yes, that is on purpose because I update my previous post

Nope.  One's HP out and the other is Line out.

Both jacks are similar. You just switch HP / Line out mode through software

Nice and short.  Sounds like the UI between this and the Studio V/3rd Anniversary (owned both) hasn't changed much or if any at all.  I wonder how much battery life for hirez playback.

From memory, SQ has improved from the V 3Rd. Much more power.

Thank you Mimouille, however the link doesn't work...

What link?
