I've tested 3 albums (Communiqué from Dire Straits, Portrait of Jazz from Louis Armstrong, and Made in Heaven from Queen) in DSD this afternoon :

-sound is crystal clear (except for Armstrong's album from 1928 but still impressive!)
-micro details are easily audible
-dynamic is awesome, very natural

Can't wait to test other album

On the other hand the DX80 heats more and drains the battery faster.

if heat and battery drain is an issue, just stick to 48/24 files. I've done null tests with 192, 96, 48, and 44.1/16....there is absolutely zero audible difference between 192 and 48. However, the null test did reveal details lost with the 44.1/16 files

I just received my DX80 about a week ago, and I'm loving it except mine seems to have a rather loud background hiss...

When playing a blank file (or at zero volume) the noise floor is much higher than I anticipated, considering the "Lovely black noise floor" reviews.
The noise is most apparent on my UE900s, although shows up in all my other IEMs (Etymotic Er-6i and various budget phones) and my budget cans. My HE-400i has no hiss, no surprise there.
It's about 2x hissier than the same files on my ipod classic, and about 4 times worse than my Galaxy S5.
The noise also gets about 40% louder when used as a USB DAC.
With EU900s hiss and music are about equal at 15 on the volume with low gain.
Gain, EQ, and DF all make negligible to no difference.
I'm on Firmware 1.5.8

I've read around and although some people mention a slight noise floor with sensitive IEMs, it seems mine is worse than average.

Is mine funky? Are my expectations too high? Any easy fixes?

I don't REALLY need the secondary SD slot so if I do send it back, I might swap over to a DX90 for the replaceable battery and rockbox ability...

Thanks in advance, guys!

If your DX80 isn't one of the very early batches, it is quite likely that it is not defective. The high output power along with the rather low SNR value, the sensitive in-ears and your own sensitivity to hiss are why you find the amount of hiss bothersome (, which I also sometimes do with sensitive in-ears in a quiet environment).

Besides getting the DX90 (that would be an awesome DAP in terms of being hiss-free), adding the ifi iEMatch (that is not just an impedance adapter but has a real buffer circuit inside so the overall output impedance will only be increased by ~ 1 Ohm) between the DX80 and the IEMs would be a workaround as well.

Major Thanks to Paul,

Lightning fast communication and he was able to run my serial # to find out that I had received an old stock, first production run piece that still had kinks in it.
Everything is sorted, and major thanks for the outstanding service.
