Hifiman Edition X

Here's a little more info about the Edition X from SoundStageGlobal.com

"Fresh off the success of its HE1000 flagship headphones, HiFiMan got lots of attention at CanJam with two new models, the Edition X and Edition S. The former is a slightly downscaled, more efficient version of the HE1000s. The company says it’s 20 percent lighter and has a sensitivity of 107dB, which is extremely high for planar-magnetic headphones, and in my brief listen it did seem to capture much of the HE1000s’ magic. The latter is a unique open-back, dynamic-driver model that includes magnetically attached plates that convert it to closed back. Both are projected to ship in late 2015. Prices are not set but expect something under $2000 for the Edition X and under $300 for the Edition S headphones."

The HE1000 is rated at 90dB/mW @ 35 Ohms.  If SoundStageGlobal's and HifiMan's preliminary info is accurate, then the Edition X will be rated at 107dB/mW @ 25 Ohms.  That's an efficiency improvement of 17dB over the HE1000!

I wonder what has been changed to allow for such a huge improvement in efficiency?

So I guess people wanted a comparison so I here was mine HE1K vs HEX. I listened and was really impressed with how good the HEX sounded. I could easily detect the HEX's ability to pick up details in songs and create a similar soundstage to the HE1K. The other thing I liked was the tight punchy bass that was neither too overpowering or too underwhelming. I actually thought the balance of bass on the HEX was superior to the HE1K. I felt this headphone was the best at the Hifiman booth. I really liked the HE1K but I actually felt that I could listen do a wider variety of music with the HEX. The rep mentioned that there was no price as of yet she at first mentioned around $2k then said probably around $1,500.

Overall I feel for my music types (rock and roll, hip hop, and electronic) this was a real win. The HEX was more enjoyable with the music I listen to while the HE1K I think would be more suited for people who love classical, jazz, and more contemporary rock.

Found this on HiFiMan's facebook too.
Looking good...

As an afterthought, I would like the Edition X to be $1000.
This is after looking at my wallet.

A little more information on this little guy is that it's nowhere near ready to be honest. The rep even said that this is an early prototype. But guess what this isn't a planar this is a dynamic driver headphone.

A dynamic driver at $300 price range I dont think this is aimimg at a PM1..
:frowning2:
Then again, dynamic driver not a bad thing..
my Utrasone ED8 slaughtered my PM1 when I had owned it..

At $1500, I think these would be a slam dunk.

I am starting to think that the HE1k was really just an expensive prototype,
and the HEX is the actual finished product..
:p

Yeah, I hope they make it $1500. At $2000, they aren't going to sell many, but people can justify $1500 easier. Hifiman hasn't gotten a lot of slam dunks recently, this better be the one.

I think it'll be worth it at $1500, beyond that they're again competing with quite a few more phones, and I'm not sure if Hifiman gains much if anything by charging $500 more ( at $2000) vs the higher sales at $1500. at $1500 it'll be directly competing with the likes of Ether and giving hifiman a good sales volume. Of course SQ wise, we can judge once more reviews are in.

......The market is like a pyramid, as the price climbs, it gets smaller. As you move from the pinnacle to the base, the potential sales units increases dramatically. In pharmaceuticals the first six months of a launch sets the trajectory of the brand (assumption in headphones). So now HiFiman is nearing saturation at the $3,000 level, time broaden the impact of their new technology at the $1,599.00 (another assumption) price point. Huge upside in the LCD-x, HD800 space, then in 6-8 months launch the successor to the HE560, elementary
