UPDATE! CAPACITY RAISE! - SF meet Saturday Nov. 7th - We have a venue and date! It's really happening! CAPACITY RAISE!! WE CAN TAKE 20 MORE PEOPLE!
Oct 27, 2015 at 4:30 PM Post #226 of 329

EVENT UPDATE:

Cap. limit: Good news - just got word from the sponsoring host Massdrop that the upper limit can be 60 attendees! So for any of you lurkers, now is your chance to get into the limelight; feel free to post that you're interested to attend and what you can bring (if anything).

Ending time: And for anyone who hasn't had enough fun by 4pm, looks like you'll probably be able to stay until 5pm, for a 7th hour.

Starting time: The host will be there early to help with setup, so you may come in about 1/2 hr. prior to the 10am start for setup, but I'd just like you to consider the rarity of this event - the more time there the better!

Also please remember to bring your own power strips, if needed.
Only 11 days left until Nov. 7th, and counting!

 ANNOUNCING SF MEET FALL 2015
gs1000.gif

LOCATION: Massdrop headquarters
100 Bush Street STE 1000, San Francisco CA, 94104
map link

DATE: Saturday Nov. 7th

TIME: 10am - 4pm

IT'S OFFICIAL AND 100% CONFIRMED!

DON'T MISS THIS ULTRA-RARE CHANCE:
UNIQUE AND AWESOME GEAR, UNIQUE FOLKS!

Maximum Capacity: 40 people. This includes one main boardroom for 15-20 people, and another nearby room for 20 or so people.

About parking: this is in the financial district of downtown SF, so we will need to arrange our own parking. The best lot I was able to find is SP Plus Parking System on 191 Battery St., 1 1/2 blocks from the event @ $15 for the whole Saturday. More parking options can be found here. I would encourage many of us to work together to arrange a carpool; or you can also take Bart to the Embarcadero station 4 blocks away.

Food: there has been talk of free pizza provided, but this will be re-confirmed later.

Setup: This is a 'local' Head-Fi meet so the atmosphere is casual, so technically you can show up anytime, however it would be helpful / appreciated if you make an effort to show up on time to set-up your gear (or even maybe 20 min. early).

I would now like to ask like each of you to post a reply here to confirm if you will be coming for sure, and to list the gear that you will be bringing (if you haven't already do so), and if you will be bringing anyone. This will allow us to get a head-count and make a 'working list' of the gear that will be present.

Also if any of you has an idea for an after-party or dinner feel free to arrange it here.

BIG THANK YOU TO @DecentLevi FOR DOING THE LIONS SHARE OF THE SETUP ON THIS ONE. BUY THIS MAN A BEER.

Also you forgot to include my +4. The max capacity is 60 now, so no harm really.

Songs uploaded to Youtube have been significantly re-encoded / compressed, sometimes multiple times, until the point where the dynamics / soundstage / FR response have been lost in translation - and IMO should never be used to bechmark audiophile grade equipment. Some of us do however share songs with Youtube, but that's only meant to 'preview' the song, and does nothing to support the artist. On the other hand, Tidal has lossless streaming, which many Head-Fi'ers use, as well as a few DSD download sites which are even greater resolution than WAV PCM, or you can buy dirt-cheap used CD's off of Discogs and rip them on your PC to lossless formats such as FLAC... just needed to vent this, as I have seen DRAMATIC improvement using hi-fi audio gear with lossless versus lossy files over the last 7+ years that I have done numerous comparisons between formats (AAC/MP3/OGG versus PCM). So basically file size does matter - but far better results with well mastered music.

On a related note, yes the sponsor of this event has confirmed we will have wi-fi.

YES, WI-FI

I'll bring a MacBook Pro to stream from Tidal. I could use my iPhone, but the MBP screen is easier on the eyes. Thanks for confirming!

No problem man. It's going to be massive. And for the person who's ordering the Mojo, I hope you can bring it. It's been getting good reviews.

And again, the hard limit from Massdrop is set to 60 people. At about 40, we still have space for 20 more. So anybody else around here feel free to post if you're interested to come. Hi-fi meets can really be a game changer.

UPDATE 1:

We have some photos of the venue at Massdrop, showing most areas.
  1. one main boardroom
  2. three small 'listening station' conf. rooms
  3. sofa lounge area
  4. kitchen area

UPDATE 2:

You know that GraceDesign M9XX DAC/amp that we keep seeing on the top of every page? Well now we will get the chance to try it ourselves too!

Let's also make sure to post some reviews after trying it...
Stay tuned for even more pre-event surprises! Alex (Dusk) & I hope to see you all there! Right on?

Is anyone else coming from Marin and interested in car-pooling?

I'm worried about the difficulty of parking and unloading gear in the middle of the financial district if I go on my own.

I think it'd be a lot easier with two people where one can park the car after the gear has been dropped off at the building.

I'm in Sausalito and I'd be on the way for anyone coming through Marin. I'd also be happy to drive myself and pick someone up as long as they are in Southern Marin.

Yeah, I was about to say... without a trolley, carrying gears heavier than, say... a Gungnir Multibit a couple of blocks is NOT a trivial matter, so car-pooling is best for loading/unloading.

I've been to MD office a few times, and it's really not easy to get gears up there. Actually, let me contact them and ask now, because this will be an issue on that day.

I will be there and will be bringing the following:

Sony MDR-Z7 (Bill P Modified)
Beyerdynamic DT880 600 ohm Premium
Beyerdynamic T5P (ALO Modified)
Audio Technica ESW-9A & ES10
Denon AH-D750 & 950
Sennheiser PX100's (First Gen)

Might add gear later!

@baronkatz nice to hear you decided to come. I think you haven't missed any of the last 4 Calif. Head-Fi meets - and IIRC, you were the designated vendor to display Schiit's gear?

I can post a screen-grab photo from Google Maps of the outside entrance to the building, If anybody thinks that would be helpful so you can recognise it when you get there? And since it will be a Saturday, I'd imagine traffic will be pretty laid back.

Levi,

The issue is that we don't really want to leave thousands of dollars worth of gear on the curb or in the lobby unattended while we have to go park.

I think most of us can use googlemaps on our own.

According to Will, there's a loading zone that you can park and take stuffs in.

Someone will have to stand in the lobby anyway, since people need a key card to get up to the office (or at least that's my experience in regular hours), so you can rest assured there will be a bunch of eyes watching your items. Plus there'll be security there, I think.

That is correct but they are not sending any gear up this time as it's short notice + not enough space for it since this is a min-meet. There will be plenty of people with Schiit gear, so I would love to get people's feedback! :)
