Hi OldRoadToad,

Glad you enjoyed your experience at the meet.  Did you by any chance have the opportunity to try the Lyr 2 with the LSST tubes ?  If so would you share your impressions ?

Thanks.

Hail and well met Old Groucho!

I did try two versions but I could discern no subtle differences.  I have a saying that if you can hear a difference, then that makes the difference.  But it is usually only for you, the listener.  I tried to hear something but all I could hear was the  music. Strangely enough I did swap headphones out a couple of times and noted what I perceived as sound level differences but that may well be the result of a difference in impedances between the two and how the amp reacts to same.  It was neither a good nor bad, just "different" .

Perhaps my failure at noticing the difference between the Lyrs was in part due to my using a track I was totally unfamiliar with by a group recommended to me by the lovely wife of Mike, if memory serves me (and it is often failing!) her name is Rosemary and she spoke with me at length on musical genres and told me of a group called  "The Civil Wars".  She was right.  I very much enjoyed the track I listened to and perhaps my unfamiliarity with them prevented me from discerning any noticeable differences between  the two but it did not stop me from enjoying the song!

Perhaps  I should have brought along my X1 or iPod Classic 60 gig, then I could have played my favorite Beach Boys tune through them, "Busy Doin' Nothin'".  At the least it would have made me sit there even longer, enjoying the music.  I found another Beach Boys fan in Denise. She was such a joy to speak with.

I do not know if this helps, but it is the truth.  I would gladly take either version, believe me!  I will probably start my foray into Schiit with a Magni2/Modi2 combination as that would allow me to get a similar setup  for my older brother too. Regardless, the Lyr2 or Asgard2 paired with a Bifrost is my current aspiration be it now or down the road after the entry level Magni/Modi.  Oddly enough, I did not notice an Asgard there but perhaps I was more focused on the beauty of the Lyr2...

Hopefully someone here prove more insightful than I with regard to your question, my friend.

The Harmon people say our trouble lays ( or is it "lies", I've always had trouble with that )  in the recording process.

Our gear cannot create better sound on sources that were not recorded/mastered well. Over the years I have come to believe that a lot of our "quest" in the gear realm is an attempt to compensate for engineers with stone ears. The trick is finding proper recordings that are musically interesting, and then learning to live with the fact that much of what we each like to listen to sounds the way it sounds, and that's it.

Having said all that, the Yggy/Rag combo has been revelatory on some recordings I thought were simply terrible. One old favorite has become far more listenable than I ever imagined.

Your insights were more than helpful Toad.  Thank you for taking the time to share your impressions in very good detail.  Meeting another Beach Boys fan, especially one named Denise was pure karma Toad. You make a good point concerning the music you listen to while trying to evaluate a product.  In the past (can't do it anymore because I live in the country side quite far from a major city) when I lived in the Ottawa area, if I was going to buy let's say a pair of speakers, I also would bring some music that I'm familiar with/listen to often.  Your analysis of the LSST tubes appears to be precise : you described what you heard.

I love the Gungnir M upgrade, will probably purchase it.
The Mjolnir 2 is a disappointment.  Only one balanced HP output, not two like the original.  That's a show-stopper for me.

Picked up a multibit Gungnir and a Mjolnir 2 immediately after the announcement. It appeared the Schiit site was under some pretty heavy transaction load. Congrats to everyone at Schiit  That was one large undertaking for a mom and pop shop from Santa Clarita. I am really looking forward to rolling some of my tube library into Mojo. Now off to list my Lyr2/Bifrost.

Yep. Mjolnir 2 didn't go live until a few minutes later than the other items, so I was waiting for it. I purchased one the second it became available.

Sweet the Mjolnir 2 has me tempted, but crap I already have so many amps lol. Looking forward to your impressions on the mjolnir 2.

With regards to the folks who were disappointed that a multi-bit Bifrost wasn't released yesterday, I'm with you.  But it makes sense that a multi-bit Gungnir would be released first.

First, it is commonplace to introduce new technology down the product chain, to enhance sales of the mid-tier products before introducing them in the lower-tier products.

Second, it allows them more time to refine designs that can fit the new multi-bit cards into the smaller cases while gaining experience with handling the upgrade process for a much smaller pool of Gungnirs in the wild than Bifrosts.  That way they can have ironed out all the kinks before the Bifrost upgrade is announced where they will face a much larger onslaught of upgrade requests (i.e., a much larger logistical puzzle).

Third, it holds back a nice, appealing product for the Christmas rush (if they can get it ready in time).

They are quite popular here in head-fi. Both my desktops amps came from them. My latest one is DAC-19 which is an R2R DAC as well.

Audio-GD DAC-19 is an R2R Dac? As far as I can tell it's a delta-sigma DAC based on the PCM1704UK. I once was the owner of it's bigger brother, the Reference 5.32. I don't know of any R2R stuff made by Audio-Gd...

The DAC-19 is R2R. Audio-GD currently lists the DAC-19, Master 7, and Master 11 as available R2R options.

It would be nice to have a little bit more info about how the Yggy and Gungnir M/B are different, I'm kind of surprised by the lack of this question.  We know that both use the same Analog Devices uber dac chips, the same multi-bit filter implementation, and presumably many other components which support the feeding of those two major features are the same or similar.  So what exactly makes Yggy a thousand dollars more expensive?  Jason has admitted the Yggy has a pretty straightforward analog output stage and the input stage on the two seems similar so I can't see where all the extra expense comes from unless they are spec'ing some exotic transformers in Yggy to shave off a bit more distortion or something of the like.

Hopefully more details about this emerge with time.
