The Pavane has been running fine now for a couple days so I think you can safely put down for being at the meet. The 009's though probably are not. I did get my Mjolnir kgsshv in a couple days ago (Thanks Birgir) and I do have Airbow sr-sc-11's. I tried for the 009's and Carbon but just it's too much of a stretch right now.

The biggest account at the warehouse I work at is leaving and we have a month to find a new account or it is find a new job time. I'm fairly confident we will get a new account but you never know. I could get a new job in a heartbeat but I would giving up many years worth of raises most likely.

You can get a good pair of either the 007 MKIs or 007 MKIIs from me to hold you over until you get the 009s.

Very tempting. But I have my heart set on the new version of 009's from PJ. The airbow's are very impressive for what they are. Miles better than the 407 and 507 imo.

I just had a conversation with @Failed Engineer and he regrets selling his 007 Mk. I, thinks it is more musical than his current 009s.

Well the 009 did just have a revision. I also put the 007 up against the airbow and I preferred the Airbow. It was an sz3 model 007 though. The Airbow is also within allot more peoples budget, although it has gone up quite a bit in price on PJ.

The Airbow really deserves some exposure and it stole the STL meet and that was with a much lesser dac and amp and the STL meet while small had some awesome gear. I would not be surprised if it stole this meet as well.

The SZ3 are MK2s and should have been black.  At least mine are.  The 007 MKIs with SN 70xxx, 71xxx are the really good ones.  I happen the like the 2015 production of the black MK2s as well.

Kharkov is actually an interesting place, boning up on my Russian.

The Gators are dropping like flies, hope they can give the a Vols decent game.....

Nashville is a great Town, with a music scene that goes far beyond country, wish I lived closer! Stay healthy, Kharkov is too far away to be much help.

Russian seems like a really difficult language to learn... Especially since there are, apparently, no signs in English anywhere to help out, and there are damn few cognitives between English and Russian to clue you into a word's possible meaning. Romance languages FTW.

The Gators can just keep on a-droppin'. I don't want a decent game, I want a soul-eviscerating rout. The 2012 UT-UF game is one of the most gut-wrenching games I can ever remember, and I was in Neyland last year to watch the egg we laid against the Gators. If it was ever time, it's time now, and we've got a decade of inferiority complexes to make up for. (Although I will say I'm concerned about the potential Will Grier has... I remember watching his HS film during recruiting, and he has a ton of upside. Kid could be a star.)

Nashville is amazing-- I went to a concert last night (The Contortionist, Animals as Leaders, and Between the Buried and Me), and was just floored-- not only were the performances impeccable (seriously, look up Tosin Abasi sometime-- guy is just freakshow good on guitar), but there were tons of people at the show, many of who knew way more of the lyrics to the songs than I did. I'm actually trying to see if there's anywhere I can get a copy of the performances-- they were just stellar!

  Cool.

I'm going to two in November.  Sufjan Stevens and Sturgill Simpson.  Not your cup of tea, I'm sure, but I'm pretty stoked for them both.

"I am large; I contain multitudes-- except pop country." -Walt Whitman. If he was alive today. Probably.

I only recently realized that Sufjan Stevens is not, in fact, the name that Cat Stevens took when he changed his name. I wish I was joking. I have no idea where I got that idea, but I was discussing that concert with a coworker the other day, and realized after a couple of minutes that either my coworker didn't know anything about the artist, or I was a complete idiot. Pretty sure it was the latter. *facepalm*

First and foremost, Ukranian Women are the absolute best!!! Maryna is an RN with an absolute heart of gold, I need to call Mr. Young and tell him I found it:wink:!

My In-Laws are absolutely wonderful. Before we were married we traveled back to get her Dads approval, he is an excellent guy. Who knew I would have to go to Murray, KY to find such a wonderful woman.

Dick, she is starting to get her into headphones, she claimed the K7XXs I won at the last meet as her headphones (and out of my trade rotation).

Every mortgage-defying HE-1000 journey begins with a first mid-fi step... Before long, she'll be trying to hide her HF purchases from you and convincing you that she's always had those SR-009s, don't you remember?

Kevin, that's a great story.  FWIW, I've been very impressed with all the eastern EU folks I have met - including Ukraine, Belarus, and Poland.  Even the former East Germans where we have a factory.  They are grounded, logical, hard working, realistic, warm and caring.  I've been going to the former East Germany since 1996 - was on the startup Team for our operation there. The wall had been down for only six years.  We helped them grow into productive folks.

As for women, I was lucky enough to meet one from New Orleans where they have their own unique warmth :).  I was able to teach Annette about music and HP's so now, and with Head-Fi's help, we are in the zone on gear and music.  Watch out - your wife's acquisition of the K7XX's may be just the start.

You sure have had a lot of cool experiences! Germany is one of the places I'd like to go most in the world... I remember studying some of the Modernist thinkers and artists in college, and it was incredible how much Germany was just the de facto capital for avant garde thought prior to WWI. Plus, I'm a big Beyerdynamic guy, so I sure wouldn't mind seeing what their facilities look like

Hotel reservations made. I just hope the LC will be here (after the volume pot problem).

Boom!! Awesome, man!! Not sure what the deal is with your LC, but I'll keep my fingers crossed for you-- that sure was a helluvan amp.

(Btw: "helluvan" is like "helluva," but for OCD English majors. Sigh.)

Update to my attendance, its gonna come down to the wire as usual. I got shafted by the VA again because of incompetence by school officials not sending paperwork in a timely manner so it will all depend on when I get that backpay for the last school semester. If you havent thought about the LA 900 as a tier 1 dynamic headphone you should. I would love to come just for the sole purpose of showing it off, but time will tell if that happens. Im sure it will be a great meet regardless :)

Honestly? If I had the LA 900, I would absolutely show 'em off too!

Really hope you can make it, man!! Keep us posted.

Yes, I plan to be there.

At this point, you, Jay, Fred, Eric, and Joe are kind of the elder statesmen of the Music City Meets-- your beneficence and knowledge are almost assumed, even as they are greatly appreciated. Also, you look too damn sharp in my cheapo aviators to miss another opportunity to strut your fashionista side.

Jude announced about 2 hours ago the release of an Ether C(closed).  He liked it better than the Ether.  Please, please tell me that Dan will be there in Nashville with one of these.  I can't seem to paste the link but it is on the Home page.

God, I know it... Just read the article about it. One of the nicer parts about not being as active on HF is not constantly debating precisely how much money I could get from a kidney towards the purchase of yet another bit of audio gear, and then I see something like that... The way Jude describes it, I could see liking either it or the open-backed version better. But if it's equal to or better than the original Ether and isolates too... I might be in serious trouble. Gulp.

Now I can't wait to hear these.   Burnley, I wonder if you can resist...

You know me too well. If they sound as good as the OG Ethers, then the answer about my potential resistance is probably going to be a resounding "No," followed by derisive laughter. So much for being good on headphones for the rest of the year...

That can be an intensely stressful situation.... I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, man. And you're welcome at the meet even if you don't bring a single thing.

The only time I got to hear them was at the Canlanta meet a few years back, and I got to switch back and forth between them. Despite being initially confused about which model was which (don't judge me, I was a baby HF-er then), I though the SR-009 sounded better immediately upon putting them on, but the 007 sounded better after I'd had a few moments to acclimate. No idea what I'd prefer with more time to actually listen, but they both sure sounded fantastic to me at the time.

On a side note: finally figured out the element of my setup that was causing the audio problems (even if I still have no idea what the heck was going on to cause it), so I'm actually listening to music regularly again, which is nice. It's kind of crazy how strongly you can be subconsciously attracted to or repelled from good or bad sound. I never listened to music in my living room setup (ever), despite its proximity to my thrown-together workout station, and after trading out my old Onkyo for an Anthem receiver, I now listen pretty regularly in there. And even on my main system, I would just sit down and do whatever I wanted to do on the computer without listening, which I now realize is because there was something wrong with the sound. Once I got it fixed, I was craving music again. Crazy.

I'm going to start reaching out to vendors today and seeing who might be able to make it this time around. Fortunately, the venue this time will be about twice as big (maybe a little more) than the last one, so if anyone decides to really load up (coughDANcough) and bring a ton of badass gear like last time, they'll have plenty of space to spread out and do it right.

Question to the group as well:

Preproman was discussing having a blind testing table set up, and I'm intrigued by this and would like to do it right. At one point, I picked up a Bryston speaker switch in order to be able to A/B different setups for the HE-6 (and to be able to use either the HE-6 or speakers without a bunch of cable switching), so I can see that being helpful, but beyond that, I'm not sure what else might be useful. Basically, I'm being lazy.

Any ideas on what we might need to be able to set up a pretty solid blind listening station? Off the top of my head, here's what I have:

  1. Curtain/drapes/visual barrier of some kind. (I realize people can just turn around, but I think this plus turning around would probably be better).
  2. SPL meter for calibration. Anybody have one?
  3. Clipboards for ease of note taking
  4. Form for taking notes based on different setups, which can be later identified

And, of course, whatever we want to compare (preamps, sources, amps, cables, headphones, orientation in reference to Stonehenge, etc).

If there was a (cheap) box that allowed for 3-4 inputs and outputs and simply allowed one to attenuate the signal on each input to a usably fine degree, that would be very helpful. Given that most closely resembles a preamp, I'm guessing we'll just have to get as close as we can volume-wise and take note of where the volume control is on each setup/combination. But if there's a better option out there, I'd be interested in hearing about it.

Whaddya think, fellas?

Ouch.  Stop right there.

Sturgill Simpson is NOT pop country.  He's the real deal, my friend.  Which is, of course, why he was completely shut out of every country music award show on the planet.  This is most likely due to the fact that he doesn't sign about tractors and levi jeans.

And here we have Country music meets Acid Rock.  Seriously, start the song at around 3:40 and you'd never guess country in a million years:

Whoa!! Shots fired!!

Think I might have deftly choked on my own toes there a bit... I'm not familiar w/ Sturgill Simpson, and had honestly never heard of him (him?) until you mentioned it. I was really more just making a halfassed attempt at continuing the anti-Taylor Swift joke/tirade from before. So I wasn't taking a stab at ol' Sturgill, I was just being goofy, and apparently took a swing without realizing what I was doing. I will most definitely check him out (love Tiny Desk Concerts), and I hereby fully rescind my slanderous implications. Unless I listen to it and he rhymes "baby" with "baby" somewhere, or something... :p

And as for Sufjan... I got nothin'. I genuinely am that ignorant on this one. Maybe point out a track or two to check out? My coworker that also loves Sufjan tends to have very different tastes from mine, so I'd doubt his ability to point me towards anything that I might end up liking, but I'd have more faith in your recommendations.

Yeah, I've got one too, and I suppose that's an option. Seems like it would be difficult to get an even reasonably close (or consistent, which is more important) measurement with a phone app, although I'm certainly open to ideas on how to do it, if anybody's sharing!

That's a hard one since Sufjan is all over the map.  Probably not your cup of tea, but I have tremendous respect for the guy.  One of the more thoughtful and unique musicians out there.

Chicago...his most popular song...soundtrack for Little Miss Sunshine
John Wayne Gacy Jr.... about a serial killer from Chicago that dresses up as a clown...completely creepy and beautiful song.
Casmir Pulaski Day...saddest song of all time.  Period.
Fourth of July...song about his mom speaking to him from the grave

A pretty depressing selection.  Sorry about that.  He also has 2 giant 5 disc collections of Christmas music if that's more your thing :p

I'm building a new center channel speaker for the HT setup and went ahead and bought a little calibrated mic that works with the app I have so it might be possible to get close.
