New Beyerdynamic T1 (2nd Generation)

The reason I suggested giving the T-1.2 more play time was because you have grown so accustomed to you're Focal speakers and the laid back, rolled off treble of the LCD-2. It may take some time for you're ears to adjust to the T-1.2 and it's more froward treble but it may be worth it.

In may case, I prefer bright, detailed headphones like the T-1 and HD-800 because my speaker of choice is the Klipsch Heresy 3. You may however prefer a more laid back sound signature, everyone is different and that's fine.

Yes, this! Nails a great point, and the reason I cringe when a customer asks, "What's the best sounding headphone at $X."  Depends what tonality you like. And what you listen to. And what your DAC and amp are. And how noisy your listening environment is. And on, and on.

But the point about your ears adjusting is also valid. And one's preferences may change over time as well. I see plenty of budding audiophiles who used to think that big bass meant better quality, but now realize that's not so.

Sounds absolutely right. We all have different taste, different ears, and even my left and right own ears don't agree ! (slight ear loss on the right side). Reaching to a compromise in this hobby seems almost impossible...but it happens.
Now it's also true I'm getting used to the T1. I've tamed down the treble (in the 8-10kz region) with my EQ and it has indeed addressed the most of the issue. Playing with the way the T1 is positioned on my head also had a great impact. Thanks for this tip !
I should receive soon a HD800S and from there, I'll make up my mind. Which one stays, which one goes. More to come

I have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT990 600 ohm Classics which recently lost audio in the left ear cup.

It seems many people buy both Sennheiser HD800S and T1 Gen2 and then return a pair.  I am leaning towards the HD800S but want the T1 for sentimental reasons (Beyerdyanmic).  I'm curious if anyone owns both and if so, if they feel it was a waste of money because one pair just is rarely or never used.

Also, can anyone confirm if the T1 Gen2 has vinyl or leather on the headband?  I watched a YouTube video and one reviewer said the T1 Gen2 are more "cheaply" made than the T1 Gen1, citing less use of leather in the Gen2.

The T1 2nd generation does indeed use synthetic leather, but it has a protein coating. Their reasoning is that from a QC perspective the finish is consistent and also it is not susceptible to degradation as much as leather from oils on the skin etc...
So it is not "cheaper" per se, as it is very nice quality material, and also very soft and comfortable.

They are actually better built with the detachable cable and improved slider mechanism.

Great points raised by @ostewart.  Not sure if you've already seen this, but the  sound signature of the Gen 2 is also different from the Gen 1, which could make this a deciding factor of sorts for you.  Apart from that, you're at an exciting point and all the best in your next purchase!

I fall into the "many people buy both Sennheiser HD800S and T1 Gen2 and then return a pair." category. I have the T1.2 and should receive the HD800S anytime soon. Stay tuned. I'll post my comparison of these two next week. I'll keep only one though.... I expect these to be quite similar, more than a LCD can be from a HD800, and if you absolutely need 2 headphones (or more), maybe you should consider with a very different sound signature.

Looking forward to your comparison. As it turns out I might just end up with one pair of headphones. I was intending to buy and keep both T1 and HD800S because the T1G2 was on sale. Turns out I might only have the Beyerdynamic because a US retailer is having problems with shipping to a US address.

Have there been any pad rolling or mod experiments by Gen2 owners recently? Or anyone who found great(er) synergy when swapping out DAC, amp or other components?

Edit: I've decided to sell my Gen2. If anyone is interested send a PM.

I haven't given the HD800 a shot, but I did have the HD650 with the T1.1 and T1.2. My DT990/600 are my reference point, along with my standard audio chain. The Sennheisers and Beyerdynamics are not even in the same ballpark, IMAO. The build quality on all of them are fantastic, but the sonic signatures are wildly different. The 650, even modded, has the "Sennheiser veil" when compared with anything by Beyerdynamic and I'm trying to sell them as fast as I can.

I wound up keeping the T1.1 out of a balance of sonics and finances. The T1 series, to my ears and gear, are pretty closely matched. I managed to get a pair of 1.1 for about $400, while the T1.2 cost north of $900. I've said elsewhere that the T1 is a grown-up DT990; all of the wild characteristics of the 990 are more refined in the T1. Now, the $100k question is, is the T1 worth the price differential? The answer is a qualified maybe.

For my gear and ears, the T1.1 is an excellent upgrade. The T1.2 just didn't have the price-performance ratio to justify the delta. I really wanted to like the T1.2; the headband oozed luxury and sounded fantastic, but I can't tell the difference between leather and pleather when it's sitting on my coiffe. The T1.1 wins on comfort/price.

The T1.2 sounded a tad more refined on the highs, though neither was what I would call harsh. Even my most annoying Tori Amos tracks were smooth with these cans. The bass was tight and punchy on both. Only on "The Greatest Show on Earth" on Nightwish's "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" CD did the bass resolution really separate the two, with the T1.2 reaching further down the register and with more detail. This is not to say that the 1.1 didn't acquit themselves, though.

Again, I found the biggest difference between the T1.1 and the T1.2 was the price. Was the T1.1 worth the $400 ($150 more than the DT990) I paid? Yes. Was the T1.2 worth nearly $1,000 (four times the cost of DT990)? No. The T1.2 is a great set of cans, make no mistake, but the price point is misplaced. Of course, my audio chain isn't top of the line, but I really enjoy what I have; Modi 2 Uber, Crack, T1.1. The M2U was $100, T1.1 $400, Crack (after ridiculous mods) $750. For $1250 I have what I consider to be an outstanding binaural set. I don't see myself upgrading anytime soon.

This was an excellent, relevant and useful post. Thank you.

I am expecting the HD800S next week if I'm home to receive them. The T1.2 should arrive in a month. If they are different enough I may keep both pairs so that I can keep one pair at work. I hope they both show up without problems.

Apologies if this has been asked and answered, but has anyone compared the T1.2 with unbalanced and balanced cables? I'm using a Cavalli Liquid Carbon so I can run balanced cables. However, the beyerdynamic balanced cable is around $145 so before I pull the trigger it would be good to know if others have experienced a noticeable difference in sound.

I am no expert nor have the balanced connection but i believe, balanced connection only reduces if not eliminate the interference with other components. It does not create nor decrease the signal. Although it produces more gain compared to single ended connection, higher volume does not totaly equate to better sound (more detailed etc.)

This is just my opinion though i might also be wrong. :)

Where can you buy the T1.1 for $400? It's $700+ on amazon atm.

Interesting. So if there is not much difference, I wonder why Sennheiser put a balanced cable with the HD800S. I should be getting my headphones next week so I was wondering if I should bother looking for an amp with a balanced connector.
