FiiO X5 2nd gen Impressions and Discussion thread

  1. ok the first major change I can detect is in the vocal presence - gone is that metallic upper range that tended to give a slightly harsh or metallic edge to vocals.
  2. This time the vocals are cleaner, the treble has a bit more sparkle and space to it and the mids seem a bit fuller and more engaging.
  3. The tonality is stil quite neutral but the Gen 2 feels a tiny bit more linear.
  4. Bass has a bit more definition and snap than the X5 gen 1 which sounds a bit softer and less accurate.
  5. These are all random thoughts to be honest and gut reaction, nothing scientific but right now the new X5 just feels more engaging and alive.

Thank you! I take it that all characterisations are with reference to the 1st-gen. X5 – not compared to before burn-in (?).

Refering to FiiO's nine points: does point 5 mean it plays DSD files without downsampling to 88.2?
Point 7: with the new power management, does that mean disengaging of certain components in the amp section for low power, compromising the SQ?
Oh yes!  The lighter weight, did Fiio compromise on the sturdyness of the 1st gen?

It is with reference to the X5 gen 1 yes and I have had one hour on the X5 Gen 2 as of right now.

Things may change the more I listen to it :)

When volume matched do you notice the X5 II volume setting to be similar to the X5 Classic? Is the volume range larger or about the same with the W4?

Trying to get a sense of the new amp implementation here. :)

The X5II is a step up form the X5. Less warm and to me because of that, a more natural sound. Very good dynamics, vocals come out of a black background with very good layering. Female voice is portrayed with a smoothness and naturalness that makes it enjoyable to just sit back and listen. Instrument separation and timbre very good. The bass is a little more pronounced on some music but still well controlled, which is a relief. All together, IMO, it is an improvement in all areas. The Wheel is a little jumpy but they may fix that in a FW. I don't know the actual run time yet but it seems way more than enough for a long day of listening, meaning over 10 hours. I forget the specs for this but is seems to run and run.

James said the wheel in the review units is the same one used in the old X5 and will be upgraded for the production units.

Bummer about the 150ohm rating. I was really hoping for 300ohm, so it would be a one stop shopping solution. Though, it seems like Fiio has been more modest in their ratings/ohm matching than they used to be. Not sure what the Vp-p is but my guess is that its enough for a 300ohm phone. I'm curious.

I thought the same as the X3II or X1?

Quick question, do the screen icons (or the pointer) rotate in the same direction as the scroll wheel?  The X5 Gen 1's opposite scroll action still gives me trouble (which is why I love the custom firmware folks made so much).
Cheers and Thanks!
