Astell&Kern AK380

I notice another mention of the recorder in the latest FW update list. Does anyone have any experience of this device? I would specifically like to know if it has a built-in microphone so that I could, for instance, just put my 380+recorder on the desk to record meetings and so on. Also, are all the controls visible from the 380 screen? Or do I need to use an app on my phone to control it? Any information/help is much appreciated.

I have the recorder. The normal package does NOT include any microphones. There is a very expensive package that isn't released yet that includes two microphones. I think its about 4000 USD.

This is a bit over the top as a recorder for doing things like recording your own podcasts or for meetings. This is a professional end recorder for recording music etc. I had real problems with the device until I found out that the bundled cables, at least in my box, were wired up wrongly. I then purchased my own cables and have had great success recording a piano with a pair of AKG C414 XLS mics. The noise floor is exceptionally low and it performs well. But there have been quite a few bugs with the software, with a bit of lag, combinations of config options doing strange things etc.

Another use for the recorder is a very high quality ripping device for vinyl/records. You can record them to DSD or 24 bit 24/192 etc.

The controls are on the 380 screen at this time. The extra app for the iPhone etc is not released yet.

Thanks Jonstatt. Answered all my questions. Sounds as though the recorder is both more than I need and (as no built-in mic) less than I need.

Mmm.....thank you thank you thank you! Astell & Kern........hopefully, offline listening will be enabled in the next firmware update. For now, the nearest proxy is to add to favorite (yellow star) to keep track of "my music."

Rather
How did u get this screen, i could not see it when updating my normal AK380

Next time you update your DAP check for an update under system information, rather than just allow the OTA update and you will see the change log for the firmware revision.
