Shure SRH1540 are $499 currently--may be able to find for less. Great isolation, excellent  detail. Can't go wrong with it--it does so many things right..
B&W P7 are $399 at present--detailed soundstage, superb soundstage, solid, excellent overall sound quality
NAD Viso HP50--also excellent--very neutral, poss. comfort issues
Soundmagic HP150--saving you some money on a superb can

There are more, but this gives you some things to read about.

May I recommend Fostex TH-600 - the little brother of their flagship TH-900 : one of the best closed headphones in the world.

Hifiman HE-500 and Sennheiser HD 650 are open headphones - They sound great but do not isolate well. The sound will leak both in and out.

Everything here is great, but I feel you'll find yourself jumping off the deep end with HiFiMan HE-500, and Fostex TH-600, really?

We're giving him good recommendations, sure. But these are common options for experienced listeners...

Sorry for my humble opinion. If it's help with my credential - I am a working musician and I live next to a big headphone store. I've tried almost every headphones that currently available in the market.  I personally prefer the sound of open headphones but if I have to choose a closed back can I would got for the TH-600 or TH-900 if the budget allows. That's why I recommended them.  But if you don't want to jump into the deep end (I'm not sure what a deep end means exactly, too expensive? probably true if you've just started out), Sony MDR-1A would be my first choice.

This is, after all, just a one man opinion. Nothing is better than first hand experience.  If you want to spend that much money, it's best to try them out. That is the best advice anyone can give you.
