Interesting. The XC seems to be a bit of a polarising 'phone - some love it, some, well do not. I was never interested in it at the price as I couldn't imagine wearing it in an office environment - too big, too much wood! But I'm going to try out the closed EL8 for sure.

Audeze EL-8: The EL-8 is a must-hear at CES 2015

Wrong. That's Skrillex.
Eagerly waiting for your impressions... don't keep us waiting for too long! (I expect to see a full, 5,000 word analysis with pictures by the hour)
This gave me a much-needed smile and laugh.
Yeah, when it comes to Audeze I tend to go off a bit - however, this time, especially this time (as the EL-8, at 700 bucks - is far more attainable than the LCD-series for many headphone devotees ) I'm going to try and be more thrifty with the verbiage and focused.
As opposed to posting more and more impressions as my listening progresses - since the phones are settling-in, I'd rather put them through more tests with other sources and systems before posting more sonic impressions!!
But coming ASAP!!!!
As for Skrillex - - oooohhh.
VERY nice guy, but admittedly I'm not a fan.
I've been involved in underground electronic dance music since the early 90's,
but some of these new DJs, since many of them can't actually beat-match with vinyl and hold a mix (it took me years to get good enough to travel abroad and DJ,
now, with the CDJs - the Sync button seems to be their best friend... Sorry for the off-topic rant...)
Taking detailed notes as I bang out some CES reports,
them Im ON IT - and I plan on doing (much to my editors dismay,

True. Skrillex does press play and click a few buttons better than anyone else on the planet.

omg! You have the el8's already

I think S.Wonder and Skrillex should totally team up with Audeze and release a exclusive track for head-fi, that would be IMO, pretty cool

Definitely looking forward to more of your el8 thoughts too!

These comments assume that the headphones I discuss in the videos or forums represent every headphone I come across. As anyone who's visited my office can confirm, more headphones and other audio gear come through here than I could ever cover in the videos, or post about on the forums--far more. Different things motivate different people; but what motivates me to step in front of the camera (and/or to hammer out text) more than anything is sharing my feelings about (and experiences with) products I think sound good, products that excite me.
Like I've said before, at any given time--and even more so in the weeks before we update the gift guide--it looks like the 4th floor of Yodobashi Akiba blew up in here, and most of it is gear I'll probably never utter a word about (on posts or video).
Actually, it was the Shure SRH940 and SRH1440 that I didn't much care for--both are too bright to my ears. I didn't review either (see the two paragraphs above), but did mention this in a video we shot about the Shure SRH1540 (which I do like very much).
@DreamKing, I'm certainly more inclined to agree with what you're saying. Mine is still just one opinion, and I've never claimed otherwise. Tyll's is also just one opinion. Mike Mercer's is just one opinion. Digital Trends' is just one opinion. John Darko's (digitalaudioreview.net) is just one opinion. Etc., etc. They're early opinions of pre-production headphones.
There's only one set of ears and opinions I trust 100% of the time--mine. I haven't heard the AKG K3003 yet, but I've read enough opinions (rather wildly varying opinions) about the K3003 to have some expectations; but I'll only know my truth when I've heard it.
I feel I've seen an increasing tendency to try to find the truth too fast, too easy. Whether it's reading different early impressions, and then conclusion-waffling with each; or expecting (and often counting on) measurements to give firm answers on how a headphone sounds. (I've commented on some of the different headphone measurement systems and methods we've seen in use around here (CLICK HERE to read my post about several headphone measurement rigs), and will be expressing more opinions and thoughts about that down the road.)
The answers don't come that easy. Read. Wait. Or dive right in and buy. It's up to you how you go about it. But stop expecting the answers to become crystal clear--much less the unassailable truth--with each early post.
As for the EL-8, here's what I think so far (and will post as much in my CES recap and thoughts in the next day or so): The only open EL-8 I've heard is the one I have here. It is pre-production--which is why I'm very hesitant to say too much about it--but it sounds quite ready (to my ears) to call done. At CES, I heard two different closed EL-8's at Audeze's exhibit. Those closed ones did not sound done to me. They were bass-lighter and not as refined through the upper mids and treble as the open EL-8 prototype I currently have here. The closed EL-8's I heard at CES reminded me of one of the prototype LCD-XC's I heard early on (which I felt sounded similarly unfinished), and which I felt came around very nicely as it approached its production form (enough so for me to buy one). I expect and hope the closed EL-8 will come around similarly before production.
It's early. Stop trying so hard to figure it out so fast. I've read several impressions of the headphones so far (here and elsewhere), and almost as many opinions. Give it time. Let it breathe. It'll sort itself out. But stop looking for cheap, fast answers, as you're not likely to find them.
AMEN!!
WELL said Jude.

Is it normal for a manufacturer to give unfinished pre-release products for review purposes if it's not the actual finished article so to speak?

Maybe not a proper review but more of a beta test to give feedback so that they can adjust and fine tune them before commiting to final specs and mass production. That is why impressions and opinions right now don't mean much because they are not related to the final production units that will be available to all.

Isn't this what OPPO did with the PM-1 and a number of people complained that the final product had no top end, so OPPO eventually released updated pads to take care of the "problem"?
I questioned this "beta testing" at the time and felt that since you (the headphone manufacturer) are never going to make a headphone that suits everyone, make it the way you feel sounds best, to your ears. If I was a headphone designer and manufacturer, I would go bonkers if I depended on the opinions of Head-Fi'ers on what is "right" and "wrong".

Understandable, but if 9/10 reviewers gave you the same feedback, you'd be crazy to dismiss it. If you want to stay in business, that is.

Would never happen....
It's as though some are in a race to be first owners of new designs, but still want assurance that they're not making a mistake in their purchase. RELAX.

And hifiman did it with the he-560.
It is normal... And perfectly reasonable. We all want information... They want feedback. And more importantly, they want and need reviews out there so that people feel comfortable buying them.
Presumably they believe that it is pretty close to the finished product. They may or may not make some final tweaks and they may adjust things based on the feedback they get from reviews.

I guess that makes good sense, plus I think Audeze deserve applauding for releasing a headphone at the $699 price point
