I just looked over the first three pages and didn't see anything on the new Fire HDX...if I just missed it, mods please feel free to merge.

I ordered mine and will have it tomorrow. I was planning to upgrade to the 8.9" anyway, but when I saw they had implemented Dolby Atmos I got really psyched. I already loved how good my last two Fire tablets sounded, having particularly amazing synergy with Grados, so this is really going to be interesting. I was reading about some of the design elements and how they implemented this codec into a 2-channel headphone rig and it's really exciting. I can't wait to hear it.

Anyone experienced it so far?

Wow, looks like I really stoked the fires of curiosity with this thread, eh?

Took delivery on the thing today, and I'm going to try and say this without overdoing it...cause I hate when people do that.

wait for it...

I guess I have to read about it.  But this should be about as exciting has a headphone thread on Audioholics.  For some reason, the two sides of audio- home theater and headphones, don't mix all that well.

But if Atmos can be done with two channels instead of 11+, count me as interested.  The wife and I are looking as a possible tablet anyway.

if CNET is anything to go by.....:

"Amazon also says the HDX 8.9's speakers are twice as loud as those on the iPad Air and it's now the first tablet with Dolby Atmos, which typically requires dozens of "surround" speakers in a theater. To claim the Atmos experience can be replicated with a $379 tablet and a standard headphone is a bit of stretch (I saw a screening of "Guardians of the Galaxy" in Dolby's Atmos-enabled theater in New York City and it was pretty awesome). We got a demo and frankly I wasn't all that impressed -- it basically sounded like some faux surround. But hey, it sounds good to be the first Atmos-enabled tablet."

Whoever wrote that at cnet is an absolute moron. Of course atmos on a tablet with headphones is not goin to approximate atmos in a theater...

The point is that compared to watching movies in dolby plus or just basic 2-channel over HEADPHONES, the difference is easily discerned and, IMO, a significant step up. Ill also even qualify further by saying the better the headphones, the more enhanced the effect. Reason being, it doesnt seem to just place objects more accurately in space, the atmos processing seems to render voices and other sounds more naturally and authentically.

How much of a difference one hears will of course be subjective. But I watch a LOT of movies with headphones, so its a presentation im very familiar with. And I can say without hesitation that this is the best HEADPHONE movie audio Ive ever heard...not even using an amp...just Grado PS500s out of the headphone jack. Cant wait to fire up the Audezes next.

He must be a friend of that other moron who rated the Beats Studio Wireless with $ stars, Excellent. And who mixes them in the list of Best High End Headphones together with stuff which you say "are you ******* kidding me?".
And I could understand that he wanted to put his top choice of the BT category, but, it just does not fit. As it also does not fit that it is his top choice, while there are LOT of much better and cheaper BT Headphones.
Whatever.
I agree with you. You cannot compare the effect on a theater with the effect on  a stereo speakers or headphones.
But it will surely make things sound better.
By the way, there is another thread, so, general about Atmos. Maybe you can cross post your experience there. So the collection of opinions starts.

Thanks, I was really starting to feel isolated over here....talking to volleyballs, that sort of thing.

Just curious, do you have to download specific atmos enabled movies or does it work with like Netflix and HBOgo? I have the previous model 8.9 HDX and thought about upgrading just for the audio but figured I'd wait it out at this point and see if they refresh again this year and make any further improvements over the already fantastic tablet.

I asked that question of Amazon as soon as I got it, and they advised that it's always engaged. I would actually suggest waiting, as well, cause I've had some glitch issues with mine. Amazon has been great about getting it replaced, but I went through three of them in short order. Seems to be pretty stable now, but I would guess the next version will be improved, as you said.

And to be fair, this is my fourth (not including the replacements) Fire tablet and this is the first time I had any issue at all.

But yeah, movies sound incredible through just the headphone output. It never ceases to amaze me. Seems to always have a particularly good synergy with Grados...not sure why.

Dang.  The last thing I need is another tablet.  But once they start going on sale, or the price comes down, I might not be able to resist.  The grado comment did not make it easier to delay...

lol, yeah I would imagine you'd take particular interest, my friend :)  I don't know waht it is...the synergy with Grados is just ridiculous, though. It sounds great with my other headphones, too, but one of my favorite things to do is watch a movie or tv show on my Kindle with ONLY my Grados plugged into it. It's like an entire multi-media hub that sounds amazing.

Thanks for bringing all this up. Since I left my wife, I've been listening to Hifiman and the Alpha Primes, not so much my Grado's.  I'm looking forward to spending time with my main rig, but where I'm currently at, the other cans make more sense. There is something about the voicing and staging of Grado's that make them my first choice for most movies and TV.  I can only imagine the effect with the Atmos processing.  I might have to break down and buy one on the next sale...
