The shure has a lot of bass, from what I hear, and it depends on the sound one is looking for. I like to hear the bite of guitars and snappy drums, where some like thumping bass drum and bass guitars. For my preferences the MSR7 is good. YMMV

They were sometimes considered the anti-M50 along with the DT 770.

I only tried it briefly some time before I got M50 so I can't remember much about their sound, except they were bassier than MSR7. I haven't tried the UE6000 but I don't get why Tyll would say it sounds better than the Shures so much that he replaced it on his wall of fame.

Where can I get stock cables? I do I need to contact Audio-Technica? They are still fine but my remote cable is losing its brown colour and it looks pretty yucky. Is there other cables that are less microphonic and would also have an in-line remote?

The Shure 840 is meant to be a studio monitor headphone. It has rolled off highs to more closely resemble studio monitor speakers, and to prevent production of overly trebly mixes. For metal, I'd personally go for the msr7, slightly over the m50x, which has a warmer, bassier sound.

Does anyone feel that the Msr7 beats the Pm3 in terms of sound quality and portabilty? Yes the Pm3 may have better bass quality but to my ears and long listening between the two I feel that the Msr7 may be on top, the mids and treble to me are much better than the Pm3 and this is coming from the Pm3 amped with the Ha2 and paired with my HTC 10. Opinion is opinion though, but I feel the Msr7 are seriously big bang for buck, especially at $280 Aud compared to the Oppo at $600 Aud. Yes you loose the leather and amazing construction, but the sound of the Msr7 is mind blowing for the price. People say its a bright analytical headphone but when paired correctly it can be analytical with a fun twist. Bass can hit seriously hard maybe even harder than the Pm3 for example, The Prodigy Breathe & 16 Bit Lolitas No Body Seems To Care, I couldnt believe I spent $280 and got such an amazing sounding headphone. Not saying Pm3 is a bad headphone because I would take the Pm3 over the Msr7 for a smooth listen especially with a good drink  but considering the price to performance, the Msr7 are truly high up with the big guns :)

I own both the msr7 and pm3, and all I can say is, if my pm3's burst into flames and stopped functioning, I wouldn't really be THAT sad.

I don't like the HA2 + PM3 too much... The HA2 alreadys cut off a bit at the high end and the PM3 sounds too artificial for my liking. I do believe that instead of the HA2+PM3 combo you should go for JDS C5D + MSR7, which is much cheaper and sound much better regardless of the price.

. I am currently using my Msr7 with my Cayin C5, already the HTC 10 has more than enough power for the Msr7 even the Pm3, I just feel that from this year and on, manufactures will hopefully realise that you can make really good sounding headphones for a lower cost :) but Pm3 though is my go to laid back cans, the come Momentums 2

They drive loud enough on the Xperia Z5, which only has a 0.35V amp. Bass is very deep but highs can be a tad brittle.

It's not quite as bassy on the Fiio E10K and the treble is smoother. However, I noticed some channel imbalance with the E10K - the left side seems more bassy while the right side sounds like it has more treble extension, but it doesn't seem to always do that. I thought maybe the drivers were damaged because I accidentally blasted them at max amp and PC volume but then I tried some other headphones and they also seem a tad imbalanced. It sounds more balanced on the Xperia Z5 and other sources. Maybe it's just in my head, but some other E10K users on Reddit recently noted the same thing with other headphones

Maybe typical problem for E10K potentiometer. I have a problem with my E10K too. Imbalance <0.5 volume (E10 have worse imbalance <1), and have weird imbalance like as you said

A lot of users say there is only imbalance at low volumes but I notice it at all volumes, probably less so at max volume but then I have to turn my PC volume down low. (I used to do that a lot but people say it adds distortion). People on that Reddit post also said it was all volumes using the DT 770 and other cans. At very low volume I actually think it's more balanced with the right side being clearer.

for myself, I hear this smoothness as detail, without the need for brightness to improve the impulse response and perceived detail. IMHO I have heard PM-3 at a meet and it left a huge impression on me, and I know it would be better for me than MSR7. Just a case of different strokes for different folks

For reference I am a planar lover, I tend to find them much more resolving over the whole spectrum, even of high end dynamic drivers (biocell, like TH-900 is an exception, though I find that headphone utterly piercing in the treble and overly present in the bass)

In my experience, the problem with planars is that they need to be driven fairly hard to wring out their potential.
