Small note is that if I understand correctly the Onkyo uses the small two channel ES9018 dac that the DX90 uses, not the 8 channel ES9018 that the 901, DX100 and upcoming X7 use. Of course it's about implementation as well, but in this case the 2 dacs isn't that 'premium' compared to other daps. ps. You're lucky you could audition the ZX2 before buying it, would still love to hear it but I don't think there's even a webshop that sells it here.

Good point it's the ES9018K2M, I thought the DX90 had a dual ES9018K2M though.

Auditoning the ZX2 was not easy, even in a capital city like Paris only one shop had it on demo, and luckily I had brought a Sony walkman cable with a portable battery, good thing as it was out of juice and the cable was missing :p I wouldn't have jumped the gun without an audition...

Good summary.
And yes, I would like balanced. Running balanced out of the Glove A1 has been fab. I genuinely wish the Hugo had a balanced option - although it sounds great as is, of course.

Balanced is great, I used it on PHA-3 for Z5 and Z7, better soundstage for sure but I prefer ZX2 over PHA-3 balanced so I wouldn't make it a definite criteria...

David does the 3,5mm TRRS plug also work in normal outputs? Or is it only supposed to be used for balanced output?

3,5mm TRRS doesn't work with regular socket, you only get sound in left channel... with some surprise like my MacBook Pro Retina which works (did some searching apparently because of mic support it has a TRRS socket... with that logic smartphones should support TRRS).

Ah thanks. Would have been great if it also worked on regular sockets, wouldn't have to switch cables

Spinfits arrived. I honestly can say this is the beginning of new Velvet sessions era for me. Perfect fit, no more flange tips, please.

Definitely night and day, has been a game changer for me :)
Contrary to some reports, I didn't suffer any treble harshness but YMMV, slightly better bass thanks to better seal...

How did they improve the sound for you, aside from comfort ?

Think my spinfits might be too small, apparently the sizes are a bit smaller. Will order an L and try them again.

I had read the opposite on this thread... The L size are 13mm in size (M is 12mm), roughly equal to 13.5mm westone star tips I used with the SE846, but one thing to consider is that they're meant for deep insertion. I have large ear canals and they do fit perfectly in L size for me.

Just got a pure silver cable from a local manufacturer to go with my Velvet and I have to say: what a improvement.
I've NEVER believed in the cable hype, mainly due to the reason that I haven't experienced any difference (in SQ) when cable rolling all my gear (full size or IEM).

But with the Velvet.. what a good surprise.

Now I just have to wait for my spinfits to arrive and see if they're really that good. Once they arrive I'll also give my feedback on their size.

I'm glad to hear. I'm completely baffled why cables are such a big controversy on this forum. Compared to others, my hearing is not that sensitive. And yet the differences between cables are night and day for me, and I strongly feel the right cable can improve SQ by 20%. And indeed this is (especially) the case with the Velvet - a quality cable significantly improves instrument separation and definition, and tightens up the bass. But cables are expensive, so I guess most people think the cost - return is not worth it so they never try. Fair enough of course, but I don't agree. Just to be clear I also wouldn't pay $500 for a cable (even though I own a couple in that range), but second hand they cost a fraction.

Anyways, glad to hear you're enjoying it :)
