iPhone 6 & 6 Plus Audio Quality

You can disagree all you want. The measurements don't lie. It really isn't opinion. It is science. A car that travels at 50 mph can be measured to be traveling at 50 mph whether I agree or disagree with the reading. Audio is not black magic.

The car traveling analogy is not synonymous with measuring every facet of audio.  I am not stating that the measurements do not lie, with regards to what it measures.  I am stating that they do not measure every facet of audio, and that measurements showing a head/earphone as flat does not mean that it will sound flat.

We all want to believe that for the sake of our pockets, but when you try more expensive 'esoteric' equipment you realise that measurements aren't the end of the story. I, for good, can't believe that something so clean and that measures so well can sound so dry and far from real life.

There are more haters of the Benchmark DAC1 than fans, and for a good reason. I'm sure most experimented audiophiles will define the Eddie Current Zana Deux and Balancing Act as 'realistic and just phenomenal' than the O2, and yet, the last one measures better.

I don't know if it's magic or what, but it seems that cheap 'good measuring' gear aren't nearly as good as 'esoteric expensive' stuff. If someone can contribute a reason for this, you're welcome.

A perfect or flat source and amp woukd sound "flat" or "dry" or "boring" not bevause they are flat but because the HP or speakers are flat. The HP or speakers should not have a flat frequency response but actually a right-downwards tilting frequency response--the Harman-Olive curve. Treble and tweeters are one-directional, while bass and woofers are omni-directional (Paul S. Barton interview with Tyll Hertsens). I believe in this. So true. Very enlightening as a matter of fact. Explains why no FR is really visually flat, and explains why younger people with more perfect ears prefers Harman curve profiled HP and speakers.

I quote from here: http://www.audiostream.com/content/qa-thorsten-loesch-amrifi Great interview by the way...ifi and amr are highly respected here.

Leaving metaphysics aside, we have evidence for example for the perception of ultrasonic content in music in the research of Oohashi et al. Lee/Geddes, J.J. Johnston and many others continually push the boundaries of our knowledge what and how we hear. Much of the cutting-edge research suggest that we both over-estimate and underestimate the human hearings discrimination in all domains and the commonly accepted limits be it in frequency or level are not particularly accurate. So much work still needs to be done before we can have confidence in asserting what can be heard and what cannot be heard.

My point is: we don't know it all yet.

Last year i uncapped my EU iPhone 5s via jailbreak / iFile.

The video makes sense and it would be awesome because it's my understanding that this path does not need jailbreaking.

Since i have installed iBackupbot to monitor battery cycles i might tinker with it but can not try seriously because my current iPhone is american.

In any case thanks a lot for the video mate.

UPDATE - Looks like on iOS 8.3 Apple blocked access to system files hence this ain't gonna work. At least for the time being.

I have good news. I was able to jailbreak my iPhone 6 Plus on iOS 8.4 and I am still able to access the system files using iFile. I have uncapped the EU volume cap by editing the appropriate files in the System and var/mobile/library/preferences.

I just gave my iPod touch 5G another try, and it sounds spectacularly well, better than anything I've heard before. I wonder how it would sound with something like the JH13, mother of God.
Its output is clean like no other, it's bass is both impactful and fast with excellent articulation and extension, and it's treble is like no other, just perfectly extended and detailed. Great PRAT and dynamics with no hiss with any headphones and IEM's, now this is a great sounding device. They also sound less strident than most solid-state gear to my ears. :)

Hi guys, I'm very new at this. I read through part of this very helpful thread, but still want to confirm. I have an iPhone 6+ and thinking about signing up for Tidal's FLAC service. Should I invest in a portable dac&amp or is it a waste of money? I was thinking of the Fiio E7K. I'm more of a R&B and Hip-Hop listener and mostly listen to music all day at work with a pair of B&O H2. I like to immerse myself totally in music while i work. Thank you!!

Don't waste your money on an external amp or DAC. Just plug your headphones into the iPhone 6 and listen, or buy some awesome IEM's like the JH16 if you're not happy with the sound quality you're getting.

+1.

If there's one thing I'd like the iPhone 6+ to improve, it would be the digital volume control (to attain 100% bits evennif not 100% maxednout volume). Is this possible?

I have only read bits and pieces of this thread, is there consensus as to whether bypassing the internal amp of the iPhone 6 improves SQ? I have the Fiio E12A ordered for use with the Soundmagic HP150 and Dunu DN-1000. I already have an apple lightning to 30 pin adapter, I am wondering if I should get a LOD or if I should just use the headphone jack on the iPhone 6 and double amp?

I have to agree with this.  Comparing music straight out of the iPhone 6 hp jack vs. using a CEntrance dac/ amp I can't honestly say which sounds better.  That goes for both Hi-Fi M8 and the mini 8.  Both ways sound very good albeit slightly different sound signatures.
