It's my signature when posting from Tapatalk.

Every year when summer creeps in my wife try to convince me to get those very sandals to go the beach but every year i stubbornly refuse and i get to the beach in my running sneakers (Guess i have somethig left to lose :)

Fear the man wearing velcro strapped sandals, for he has nothing left to lose.

Good man for holding out!
SilentFrequency, blond(e)s are my favourite. Don't tell my wife. She's brunette!

It's a Bill Murray quote that i found sort of funny (cause i have always disliked velcro strapped sandals). Every year when summer creeps in my wife try to convince me to get those very sandals to go the beach but every year i stubbornly refuse and i get to the beach in my running sneakers (Guess i have somethig left to lose :)

Thanks and I get that now :)

Yes. I must say that i'm quite impressed with iPhone 6 performance at high volume. Tons of weight while retaining lots of clarity. I don't think i have heard my UM3x sounding much better with any other source (and God knows i have tried quite a few). It is hard to believe that it is a phone.

Definitely adore the iPhone 6 at high volume.  The 6 pairs with the Surpa and Legend R magnificently!  (Just imagine this is Bart with a black version of the Alpine Headphones)

Please read this thread if you have not already.
Provides opinions of some very well respected head-fiers on DAPs.

I recently did a double blind test with a friend.

We tested HM-901 (standard and balanced amp card) , AK100 Mk2, AK120, X5 & C5, Ak100 & Gloveaudio A1, DX50 with Shure SE846, UE900s and JVC HA-FX850. As a reference set we used a HD800 on a HDVD600 with balanced cables.

Conclusion was the same as in the thread you linked. Slight differences, but so slight they are almost irrelevant. Funny enough in a blind test with an input switcher, the AK100Mk2 (with FW2.41) and Ak120 were indistinguishable from each other. Surprisingly. Adding the DX50 to the mix was shocking too, we couldn't tell the difference.
Adding the HM901 to the mix we could hear a better soundstage and the A1 added a bit more dynamics and even darker background to the mix.

Again, we did all the tests with your headphones in your ears, volume matched outputs, same song playing (HD tracks demo songs in FLAC) switching back and forth (by the other person) randomly between up to 4 players at a time.

If you are not a musician (like the poster in the other DAP shootout) it's so hard to compare anything if you have to disconnect and reconnect your headphones etc. so using the input switcher is again removing the "memory" issue that you have to memorize how something sounded, because you can switch back and forth immediately with the same track playing.

So if I hear people musing about how firmware upgrades change the sound so groundbreakingly without testing them side by side, I just smile....the differences are microscopic at best.

Blindtesting is always an eyeopener as is using an input switcher, incredible how we fool ourselves in exaggerating the differences we hear or tricking ourselves in hearing differences that simply aren't there.

So our conclusion overall was: we did like the 901 and the Gloveaudio best, however by such a small margin that we would have been happy with the sound quality of any player. And that includes the $199 DX50 - after spending thousands of dollars we were expecting more. So we will continue using our expensive players as there were (at least in some) a few improvements. But would I buy it again? Probably not.

Spiderman was testing too.

I think people here and other audiophile circles are exaggerating the differences that dacs and amps make in sound. 95% sound difference stems from headphones and speakers. The only requirement is power. A non-European iPhone may not drive HD800 well because it's not designed to do that, yes you do need an amp for that. However, it can drive an IEM as good as DAPs worth hundreds of dollars. Most of the time people pay for snake oil.

I also think that CD quality is as good as human ear can hear. What matters is the mastering stage. If the mastering engineer does his work well, the music will sound beautiful whether it be on CD, high-res file or even 320 Kbps MP3 file. CD quality is the optimal one though considering SQ/file size.

 +1

It's headphones/speakers where it's at. After all those are the ones who turn electricy into sound.

Possibly a bit off topic but I found this interesting.

Regarding differences between DAPS etc. I've come to the conclusion that the last thing that I can trust is my ears!

My momentum headphones pair so great with my iPhone 6+ it's so amazing sound quality it's just the best iPhone I've ever heard! :) (and my hd800's sound amazing too with iP6+ and hi Fi m8 amp).

I honestly think Apple have done a totally great job with the iP6/+ for sure! :)

I'm pleased the 6 suits you. Doesn't sound like my flavour. The last thing my IE8's need is more warmth. I shall be hanging onto my 5S as long as possible.
I fully expect Apple to head down the "optimised for Beats" route.
They don't give a **** about us audiophiles. Mass market is where they operate.
