The 1A's should be showing up at the retail Sony Stores pretty soon.  I'll definitely be having a listen when they do!

Sony's website says there is indeed an optional upgraded cable from Kimber for the 1A.

I'd buy the cable. It would work for my fidelio x1. Not sure what kind of enhancement I would hear on either of those sub-$300 headphones but I would love to give it a listen. $200 might be my limit for a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable though.

well, in singapore its a $400 difference between the 2. So i never bothered to compare them. What is sure though, the 1R was never quite good enough for its price

how did the previous model compare to B&W P7 ?

the p7 is quite pricey for the closed portable over-ear headphone product category.

Hard to compare because they are tuned so differently. Comes down to preferences, but the P7 have more emphasized low bass and highs. The Sony's have emphasis on upperbass/mids. P7 sound more colored to me but tastefully so. Aside from sound signature the Sony are just plain more portable and comfortable, I can't wear the P7 longer than an hour. They sure are pretty tho

the Sony definitely looks good and also looks luxurious to me, mostly because of thicker than average earpads. im hoping these take away the upper bass and upper mids emphasis. the forward vocals overpowered more detail than the forward bass IMO. it was like forcing me to listen to the vocals.

Looks like they are on backorder everywhere, I don't think any normal person has them yet. Maybe some beta testers and possibly a few lucky pre-orderers. Even on eBay.jp the buy-it-now is for a pre-order.
The ear pads sure do look nice, although Jude said in his CanJam preview video that he preferred the comfort of the original 1R!
I'm hoping for some CanJam photos and first impressions, but I think people are more hyped up about the flagship Z7 with good reason; that looks like it will be something special.

@wigglepuff  You can hear Jude's very brief take on the MDR-1A / 1R comparisons here at the 35:00 mark. He says the sound is updated with more low bass and shimmery highs. Pads are thicker and although "ridiculously comfortable," he prefers the comfort of the old ones.

had the 1r and the momentum..... momentum won esailly except for confort and soundstage.... the 1r sounded muffled and boring to my ears but it was very confortable (Although my ears touched the drivers a bit but with the new more rounded pads this may be solved) and beautifull.... i really hope this 1A can be a game changer for me in the lifestyle headphone department.... if they can combine a similar sound to the over ear momentums, combined with the mdr 1r sonfort and soundstage i think this is the can i may be waiting for.... to be even better they need to replace the most platic parts of the 1r as well and to fix that jack rattle problem..... if all this things are sorted out..... damn i am going to love them so much.... XD
