I'm doing it slightly different. I apply SoX resampler at first. I'll post my configuration when I' ll come home.

That would be great, thanks.

Currently I'm just using it on Driver native config.

Interesting I thought there was only one way to do it. I use HQPlayer so I have all my Redbook upsampled to dsd 256. I have foobar and it is ok but HQplayer is really on another level.

Downloaded and tested HQPlayer briefly, there are so much configuration. Cool thing is it can play using the native AIO driver of the DAC. The software also cost around USD 100...

How do you upsample using HQPlayer?

Here is my configuration of foobar2000 for upsampling to DSD256 on-the-fly

I presume foobar2000 and Sony PHA-3 ASIO driver are installed.

Components used:
SoX resampler ( http://www.hydrogenaud.io/forums/index.php?s=67eb254fcb55c113709821d94d801774&showtopic=67373&view=findpost&p=600000 )
There are 3 versions. Normal, mod and mod2. You can download all 3, but we need just mod and mod2.

ASIO support ( http://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_out_asio )

Super Audio CD Decoder ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/sacddecoder/files/foo_dsd_asio/ )
Grab the latest version (as of writing this foo_input_sacd-0.7.8.zip ) and extract it. You will get ASIOProxyInstall-0.7.2.exe. Install this following on-screen instructions. You will also get foo_input_sacd.fb2k-component.

Load all components to foobar2000.
At foobar2000
File > Preferences > Playback > DSP Manager load both Resampler (SoX) mod and Resampler (SoX) mod2

Select Resampler (SoX) mod and click Configure selected. This is for sampling rate 44,1k and multiples. Don't forget set quality to Best.

Select Resampler (SoX) mod2 and click Configure selected. This is for sampling rate 48k and multiples. Don't forget set quality to Best.

File > Preferences > Tools > SACD set Output Mode to DSD

File > Preferences > Playback > Output > ASIO select Run with high process priority, if you are running 64-bit system select also Use 64-bit ASIO drivers

double-click foo_dsd_asio

File > Preferences > Playback > Output select ASIO: foo_dsd_asio as Device. I use Buffer length 50 ms.

That's all. During playback both PHA-3's LEDs, Hi-Fs and DSD, should lights up.

You can try this free DSD64 sample Michel Godard MONTEVERDI: A trace of grace www.hifistatement.info/download_godard/A_Trace_Of_Grace_1-28.dff

lithrai, thanks for such a detail guide. Managed to set it up and running :).

It seems to be my white noise problem could be with the AIO driver, it happens on foobar as well. Wonder if it's a Windows 7 issue. Samething need to fiddle around with on and off and output to resolve the issue.

I thought the PHA3, if plugged into a 2.1amp adapter would charge at the same time you were using it. For some reason mine doesn't.

The Sony rep has on a few occasions posted that under no circumstances can the PHA 3 be played and charged at the same time. Bummer.

Which is ridiculous that they made it that way. Sitting at a desk just to run down the batteries in a few hours is a poor design. I thought someone had posted that they had run it on the charger and played at the same time but maybe I read wrong. I know from experience now that no, it doesn't charge and play but again, for such a short run of an amp/dac, not being able to play it at the desk is frustrating as it only last a few hours.

Yah, that was certainly a design decision I don't understand myself.

I have the Canadian version of the PHA-3 which, presumably, is the same as in the States. I use mine as a desktop unit fed by my Mac Pro while plugged into a charger. The unit is sometimes left on for days at a time. It is always fully charged ready for portable sessions. It does not charge while in use, but neither does it drain if plugged into a power source of adequate amperage. I use a 2.1 amp charger. If I use a USB port or light charger such as an Apple iPhone cube it will run the battery down. So while it won't run and charge at the same time it does make a good desktop unit. A very respectable and versatile device if you care for and feed it properly.

I have a 2.1 amp charger as mine will only charge from this. At first it would charge from lower output devices but then strongly stopped. I had to purchase a 2.1 amp converter just for it. It doesn't make sense that you can't leave it plugged in, maintaining the charge and use it. I am trying to figure out if there is something I am doing wrong but it is pretty straight forward. The European version doesn't even have a battery so you obviously have to use an adapter. I have an adapter that is for Apple devices and puts out 2.1 amps and another USB port for other devices but the Sony will only charge from the Apple dedicated 2.1 port. I have a battery pack it will charge from but it will charge on nothing else.

I just received my PHA 3 yesterday and did complete charging it on the iPhone cube (worked fine). After using it for a while last night, I forgot to turn the volume control off and the unit was almost completely discharged this morning. It wasn't plugged into a charger. Now I'm using the 2.1 amp charger to recharge it so thanks for the useful information. I'll be evaluating the unit carefully over the next few days against my Centrance m8 to see if it's a keeper. I am using it with my ZX 2 so I can use balanced headphones (Audeze LCD-X) and it drives them with no problems. I am concerned about being able to replace the goofy little Experia cable that connects the ZX 2 so I'd appreciate knowing if there is a place to purchase an extra one. I assume I can get one from Sony but my initial searches haven't turned any up. My initial impression is favorable but time will tell!
