Sorry if this question has been asked before, but I haven't come across it in that case.I've got a friend who swears by Beats and tries to "convince" me that they are actually good and not overpriced fashion accessories and when I say he hasn't heard where the real sound is at all he says is that he's tried many headphones "like Sony and Bose" and that the Pros (not even the Studio) are much better. What do I do to convince him without shattering his world (i.e being excessively harsh and critical)? Is there some miracle video that I can just show him that will help convert him to the audiophile master race?I would show him some good headphones, but he lives pretty far from my house and we aren't that close so it'd be silly to bring him over just for that.It would make me seem a bit desperate to prove my point.

I would just say: "You're absolutely right." - then I would talk about something else. Trying to compare who has the bigger swizzle stick is a waste of time.

It's like trying to wean a soccer mom off her Q5 / X5 / Discovery / XC90 / American behemoth equivalent. Or a younger version of that from her purple or white Beats, yoga pants and Macbook Pro. Or a certain type of Head-Fi'er from his Grados

They have to do it of their own accord. They are convinced they're onto the right thing. And as we can see, if enough idiots believe that, you get a movement such as the above going. You're not going to change that. Develop your own nerd style.

Its a free country, he has the right to be ignorant.

I agree. But I really think that we should be living in a "free world"...

Everyone has the right to their own opinion. And just because there's a huge following of audiophile quality products, doesn't mean that the general consensus is right either. It just means that lots of people agree on the same things, and I can almost guarantee that many have no idea either and are just going along for the ride...

Either way, it's all good :D

There's a huge following in our head-fi world but the world is much bigger outside.

Take your friend to a Head-Fi meet. If he still swears by Beats, agree to disagree and move on.

Send him here, tell him to research (or audition) all that gear, and see if he dares to boast about Beats again!

There is a lot of ignorant head-fiers that like to portrait the beats much worse then they really are too. Taking over the bose stick. I think it´s about even steven honestly between the beat fans and the elitistic no bose and beat headphones can ever be any good.

The Pros don´t sound that bad heard many worse headphones. Some priced higher . You would expect they would sound like a rats ass farting :)

You have a point, but since the price/performance ratio is way off, the higher the price of the thing you buy is, the more you're going to essentially be ripped off.You could get a nice Q701 or something along those lines and pair it with a Magni/Modi and that would sound much better. Alternatively you could buy a used SR325i and do the same thing. You might even get it new and only pair it with an amp.All of those options will sound much better than the Pros and give you more upgrade flexibility. The Pros don't actually sound bad, just relatively bad considering their price.

I take the Pros over the Q701 any day in a week .

Need to take a better example to convince me. It´s just that it´s a popular thing to bash on beats when there is so much better example of crappy overpriced headphones :). You picked a perfect example particularly since it´s the third release of the same damn headphones by AKG. They aren´t spending anything on research yet we should still pay premium for that hollow sounding can?

Well the difference is that one costs $200 and the other $400.I've listened to the Pros and I don't think they are twice as good-sounding as the Q701s.Sure the Magni/Modi makes it go up to $400, but with one you are getting the ability to be able to buy literally any pair of headphones you want and still be able to power them and with the other you are not.Though I do agree that they've been sitting on their asses for a while now. There's also the HD 600/650 but I didn't mention them since they aren't exactly bass-y headphones like the Pros are.

I've never heard Beats, but read the usual rumors. I wonder what your friend likes about them more.

I spent $300 on Bose headphones before joining Head-Fi. Although I do enjoy them and they sound much better than many cheaper models I tried, I regret buying into the mainstream advertising that brought me to them. If I had done more research beforehand, I could have gotten far better value. Oh well...upgrading my system soon anyway! :)
