The numbers just don't make sense.
Okay explain to me the attraction of the Sony PHA1-1A amp vs Fiio E12 or even the E11K
PHA-1-1A - Price $299.99, Maximum Output Approx. 148mW + 148mW (8Ω, 10% distortion) Approx. 80mW + 80mW (32Ω, 1% distortion) Approx. 16.4mW + 16.4mW (300Ω, 10% distortion), Battery life 6H. No signal to noise ratio given. Frequency Response 10-100kHz. (great if you listen to recordings of dog whistles) Dimensions (W x H x D) Approx. 62 x 18.5 x 109 mm
E12 - approx. Price $150.00 Output Power: ≥880mW (32ohm) (440mW + 440mW) Headphone Impedance: 16-300ohm ● THD+N: <0.005% ● SNR: ≥110dB ● Frequency Response: 20Hz~20kHz ● Battery Capacity: 9.7Wh (880mAh/11.1V) ● Battery Life: >12hours ● Size 124x65.5x14.5(mm) ● Weight: 159g.
E11K - approx. Price $65.00 Output Power: 270mW(32Ω)(135Mw + 135mW, THD: 0.005%@1KHz); 450mW(16Ω, THD: 0.004%@1KHz), Signal to Noise Ratio: >108dB, Battery life >16H, Dimensions: 91.2 x 56 x 13.0 mm
The PHA1-1A is 2x the price of the E12 and almost 5x the price of the E11K. The PHA1-1A has half the battery life of the E12 and less than half the battery life of the E11K. Yes you can argue that output power ratings are unreliable at best but come on the PHA1-1A isn't even in the same ballpark as the E12 and even the E11K shows better numbers. Don't even get me started on the distortion figures.
There is no way you can convince me that the PHA1-1A at $300.00 is going to sound twice as good as the E12 at $150.00 with half the battery life and a lot less power. Tell me what Sony's engineers are smoking these days because they must have been high on something when they came up with this amp at this price point with these specs. Hey maybe they can sell you some swamp land in Florida when you buy the amp!!
If you have read any reviews of the E11K the reviewers say the E11K is coming very close to the sound quality of the E12 with the power output being the main difference. Honestly I would buy the E11K at about 1/5th the price before I would sink money into the PHA1-1A. Heck with the headphones I am using the power output of the E12 would be overkill for me.
To me a $300.00 amp to go with a $300.00 DAP just doesn't make sense proportionally. It would be like putting $1000.00 rims on a station wagon. Save the $150.00 and put the money towards some really good headphones which will make alot bigger difference in the sound quality than a more expensive amp.
