Sony's new flagship 2014 - MDR-Z7

I hope to have my Surf cable sometime in the next few days. I'm going to give it a good week or more before I post any impressions so I can really hear if they make much of a difference.

Also I had a chance to listen to some HD800's and while they are amazing I'd still rather have the Z7, they were just to bright up top for me. Now the HD800 was a detail machine and had a huge soundstage but for me I just prefer the Z7's tonal balance and warmer sound.

I agree. Sounds are subjective :D, and just as long as you are happy !

If you ever have the chance to try a HD700 sometimes, you might like it. I know I did after auditioning it together with the 650 and 800. It has a darker soundsignature compared to the 800 and also great details and impressive soundstage. Besides that I thought it was more comfortable..
My Z7 only gets playtime in balanced mode from the Pono nowadays

YES. It amazes me when I see comments that say the HD700 is bad in any way. It is my all-time favorite open-back dynamic headphone. I sold my set to fund more headphone adventures, but when I hit the Lotto (that I don't play) I'll most definitely have them in my inventory. They have the clarity of a T1, the soundstage almost as wide as the HD800, and the bass of a DT770 80-ohm. That's the best way I can think to describe them, which nails each of those 3 headphones' best traits. HD700 is an awesome all-rounder, especially if you like clarity with a very nice bass response.

I almost got the HD700 instead of the Z7 but just thought I'd like the sound signature a little more on the Sony. I do think the HD700 is in my future though.

I prefer the Z7 over the HD700.

As much as I love my Z7 (and I really really do) I do want a new open-back headphone because I've had my HD600 and HE-400 for a few years now and want something different. I think the HD700 would be a good option, also the Oppo PM-2, NightHawk (which I think is semi-open), LCD-2 or HE-500. As you can see I like my headphones on the warmer side. I don't mind a crisp treble per-say but I like the over all tone to have warmth. I bought a Beyer DT990 and the treble can get a bit hot but that's not what bothers me, its the fact they sound to thin and analytical for me.

I'm loving the NightHawk.

I'm loving the NightHawk.

I decided to keep the HD650 as the open alternative to my Z7. To me it fits a little bit better than the HD700.

I think the ZMF Omni will also be a nice semi-open complimentary headphone.  I'm on the Omni Tour, but I won't see it till well in the Fall...

I looked at the ZMF Blackwood I think it was called before I got my Z7. I looked at a lot of headphones before I got these, it was like a 2 or 3 month process for me so I think when I'm ready for my next pair it will go a bit quicker.
