Sony's new flagship 2014 - MDR-Z7

Just ordered. $433 USD using Paypal.  No tracking number yet.
Betting this works as I emailed my US Sony Dealer to cancel my order from 5 weeks ago.
Can't wait to use Jason's sexy stand.

How did you manage that? I tried to order see my post above, and a live person said that I can't order it from the US using the Canadian site.

I did not go through a salesperson, just the prompts.  It had a pull down for US below the product insurance choices.  I did not pick any of those and confirmed for international delivery.

I (again) hesitate to write this because of the long running disagreement regarding cables -
whether or not they affect SQ.

About 3 weeks ago, I bought the Kimber Kable upgrade for my Z7's which I've had pretty
much since they were first released in the US.

However, I  received the 3M version.  I wanted the 1.2M version.

Nonetheless, I listened to the 3M version for a week or so (Sony
offered a 1 month return window) and heard distinct improvements
from the stock cable.  And this was no real surprise, since Sony
itself is promoting the Kimber Kable as an "upgrade over the stock
cable.

Returned the cable via USPS, Sony promptly credited my credit card
with a full refund.  That was expected, but nice anyway.

Bought the 1.2M version of the Kimber, and I'm glad I did.

To my ears, there's clearly more impact, definition, and a wider
and deeper soundstage.  The treble has less "softness", and the
bass is tighter.

I'm really, really pleased with this purchase, and recommend
it highly to any Z7 owner. (I would just confirm the 1 month
return option.)

Good o hear.  I had the 2m MUC-B20BL1 Kimber Kable for almost a month now but still no MDR-Z7. Still skrink-wrapped.
I am hoping my Canadian order arrives this week.  Of course, if my Sony distributor did not cancel my April order, I may get two pairs.  Then, i can do easy A-B comparisons.
There is one other Sony headphone not a lot of people talk about.  It's the MDR-HW700 for home theater.  This wireless surround sound phone goes for around 350-400.  It's actually very comfortable, resembles the Z7 (pleather pads) and is one of the reason why I ordered the top of the line Z7.

I did the same thing using the international checkout, entered my payment, and nothing happened , simply returned me to the the account page, see if I wanted to change my info, that's when I called  their number.

I had that happened also.  When it did, I logged out, log into the account and went through the same steps and got to paypal on this try.
When Paypal showed the correct vendor and product info, I confirmed.

Whats the sub  bass of the z 7 like?

So so in my experience. As I have posted in the past, if sub bass is very important to you most likely you will be underwhelmed by that aspect of the Z7. I have to admit that I was a little disappointed in the sub bass even compared with my HE 560 that I had at the same time. Overall the Z7 is a very nice headphone, but sub bass is not a strong point in my opinion.

As the previous poster, to me sub bass is not the strong forte of Z7. The bass is more on the mid bass.
If sub bass is what you looking for, for roughly the same street price, try the Fostex TH600.
I had the TH600 before but sold it as the mids suck-out is a no go for me. But if you tend to listen to EDM, etc, the TH600 will serve you better.

Do you have any other comments on a compare between the two? I'm torn between them and the more I read about the th600 the more I lean towards it.

Well, the TH600 is very V shaped, so mids are extremely faded.  But the bass is far punchier, and is stronger in the sub-bass.  The Z7 is closer to even with a slight mid bass roll off, which gets quite addicting.  The TH600 is faster and more aggressive with faster music.  The Z7 responds far better to better amplification, and cable upgrades.  The Z7 loves to go balanced, where the TH600 just goes "Meh..."

I find the tone of the Z7 quite addicting over time...

I find the sub-bass on the Z7 fantastic. I mean it moves the air, so that you feel the sub-bass more than that you hear it. And I had the bass cannon JVC SZ-2000 which was a big disappointment to me. I never experienced this with any other headphone before. So the Sony does not try to produce a loud distorted sub-bass, it produces an undistorted sub-bass that you feel more than you hear it. I can only recommend anyone trying it. It is simply great.
